About the Role

In collaboration with medical directors, technical directors, and administrative directors, you will oversee and manage a laboratory section(s) of DMC University Laboratories (DMCUL) sites to ensure quality, timely, and efficient laboratory operations. This role involves developing system-wide policies and procedures aligned with hospital and DMCUL goals, communicating with personnel across all sites to ensure efficient patient care, and working with the management team and medical leadership to maintain compliance with regulatory and licensing agencies.

DMC University Laboratories is a regional, integrated laboratory system providing services to the eight hospitals of Detroit Medical Center. Established in 1993, DMCUL includes Core Laboratories, Specialty Laboratories, two rapid response hospital laboratories, a Centralized Stat Lab, Centralized Blood Bank Lab, and a full-service outreach infrastructure with patient service centers, remote ambulatory laboratories, marketing staff, courier system, and billing department. The service area covers Southeast Michigan and offers a test menu of over 1,000 tests, with less than 1% sent to outside reference laboratories. DMCUL also provides reference laboratory services to other healthcare systems in Southeastern Michigan and several out-of-state facilities.

Responsibilities

  • Develop system-wide policies and procedures in alignment with hospital and DMCUL goals and objectives.
  • Communicate and involve appropriate personnel at all sites to ensure efficient patient care.
  • Ensure laboratory sections comply with regulatory and licensing agencies, including JCAHO and CAP accreditation requirements.
  • Provide input into collaborative goals, objectives, and strategies for the section, and measure and assess performance.
  • Assist in the development and monitoring of the budget for the division and multiple departments.
  • Delegate daily operations activities of sections to front-line management staff or assume direct responsibilities as needed.
  • Draft policy provisions and provide interpretation of department policies.
  • Identify the need for and draft or define procedures/protocols in collaboration with higher management; modify as necessary.
  • Initiate or recommend personnel actions such as hires, terminations, and disciplinary measures, and provide input on performance appraisals.
  • Assist in developing daily, monthly, and yearly goals for the department and assess goal attainment.
  • Monitor activities to ensure compliance with laws, government regulations, and DMC policies.
  • Implement external and internal audit recommendations as directed.
  • Ensure hospital departments achieve objectives for diversity of suppliers.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Biology or related science, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Master’s Degree in Business, Management, or Administration is preferred.
  • Five or more years of progressively responsible experience in supervision or leadership of laboratory operations.
  • Registered as a Technologist with the American Society of Clinical Pathologists, National Certifying Agency, or equivalent.

  • Technical Proficiency: Ability to read, interpret, and write technical materials; technical knowledge of Specialty Lab operations.
  • Project Management: Define program, project, or process objectives; identify stakeholders and their interests; plan steps; coordinate and allocate resources (human, technological, fiscal) to accomplish goals efficiently.
  • Leadership: Demonstrate willingness to pursue leadership roles with increasing accountability; comfort with decision-making; coaching, teaching, and counseling skills; ability to inspire confidence and forge alliances.
