Laboratory Manager - Microbiology

About the role

The Microbiology Clinical Laboratory Manager oversees the daily operational activities of the Microbiology department at UAB St. Vincent’s East in Birmingham, AL. The position works Monday through Friday, from 8:00 PM to 5:00 AM.

Responsibilities

• Direct the technical and non-technical operations of the Microbiology department.
• Manage staffing and production schedules to ensure adequate coverage and proper use of overtime.
• Supervise, train, and mentor laboratory supervisors and other staff members.
• Ensure the diagnostics laboratory meets market-leading service levels and complies with regulatory requirements.
• Develop and implement laboratory procedures and manage equipment and methods.
• Communicate effectively with leadership, clients, sales, corporate operations, and departmental staff.
• Investigate deviations from established procedures and implement corrective actions.
• Maintain a clean and safe work environment.
• Provide technical knowledge in assigned departments.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree in a Chemical or Biological science, Clinical Laboratory Science, or Medical Technology.
• 5 years of experience as a Technologist in a clinical diagnostics laboratory in Microbiology.
• 2 years of supervisory experience managing several direct reports.
• ASCP or AMT certification preferred.

Qualifications

• Strong working knowledge of CLIA, CAP, and relevant state regulations.
• Understanding of laboratory operations and policies.
• Proven success in training and developing employees.
• Ability to solve problems and provide solutions under minimal supervision.
• Proficient with Laboratory Information Systems and Microsoft Office.
• Effective communication skills, both written and verbal.
• Attention to detail and strong organizational skills.
• Comfortable handling the physical requirements of the position.
• Able to pass a standardized color blindness test.
