About the role
The Kitchen Manager oversees kitchen operations to ensure students are served nutritious and attractive meals in a clean and caring atmosphere. Responsibilities include enforcing food safety and sanitation practices, program regulations, staff development, and promoting good community relations among school clientele as directed by the supervisor.
Responsibilities
- Participate in daily kitchen tasks including preparation, serving, cashiering, and sanitation (25% of time).
- Supervise and train 1-2 employees (10% of time).
- Ensure all staff are trained as directed (10% of time).
- Delegate assignments and ensure timely, efficient completion to meet labor budget (10% of time).
- Manage inventory valued at $5,000–$7,000 and follow department revenue handling procedures (5% of time).
- Submit food/non-food orders, payroll, attendance records, production sheets, inventory, maintenance, and equipment requests to the central office accurately and on time (5% of time).
- Coordinate promotions to increase meal participation (5% of time).
- Ensure compliance with health department sanitation standards (5% of time).
- Attend required meetings, trainings, and development sessions; stay current with district/department communications (5% of time).
- Share information with kitchen staff promptly and carry out directives from supervisors or leadership (5% of time).
- Follow safety policies, workers’ compensation procedures, and HACCP mandates (5% of time).
- Perform other duties as assigned (5% of time).
Supervisory Responsibilities
This role includes supervisory duties such as interviewing, hiring, directing work, assigning tasks, training, evaluating, disciplining, and terminating staff. Direct reports: Food Service Worker.
Requirements
- High School Equivalency (HSE) diploma.
- One (1) year of professional work experience.
- Proficient in English (reading, writing, and speaking).
- Must obtain ServSafe certification within 6 months of hire.
- Criminal background check and fingerprinting required.
Desired Qualifications
- Experience working in the public sector.
- 1–2 years of experience as an Assistant Kitchen Manager, Kitchen Manager, or Restaurant Manager.
- Experience working with diverse racial, ethnic, and socioeconomic backgrounds.
- Racially conscious, culturally competent, and committed to continuous improvement.
Physical Requirements and Working Conditions
- Medium work strength level (lifting or carrying up to 50 pounds).
- Primarily works indoors in a loud noise environment.
- Handles, prepares, serves, and cleans up various proteins (beef, chicken, fish, pork, plant-based options).
- Requires repetitive bending, reaching, and pulling.
- Prolonged standing/walking.
- Eye/hand coordination for register and computer operation.
- Visual concentration on equipment.
- Exposure to temperature variations.
- Work location may change to meet organizational requirements.
