About the role

This position plays a critical role within the Second Line of Defense Compliance team, supporting the U.S. Consumer Proprietary Lending portfolios with a high focus on Cash Back products such as Blue Cash Everyday, while also supporting legacy lending cards and other products. The role provides strategic support to drive innovation for the business while building an effective framework for compliance with applicable laws and regulations. Focus areas include new product development (including associated Card benefits), marketing strategies, risk management initiatives, process control, customer communications and complaints, and issue management.

Responsibilities

  • Provide Compliance Oversight to First Line of Defense USCS Card business stakeholders on regulatory requirements applicable to projects, including new product launches. This includes offering effective challenges to business stakeholders while collaborating with them and other support units to ensure proper communication across organizational lines.
  • Review and perform effective challenges to marketing campaign strategies and advertising materials to adequately mitigate compliance risks and provide regulatory guidance on consumer credit laws, including Truth in Lending, UDAAP, and Fair Lending.
  • Research federal, state, and local laws, regulations, American Express National Bank, and Enterprise-level policies and procedures to provide guidance on regulatory requirements to business stakeholders.
  • Support new initiatives through the New Product Approval (NPA) governance and similar processes, integrating effective controls, testing, and ongoing monitoring into new and existing processes.
  • Support the Bank’s Issue Management framework processes and policies to ensure timely closure of gaps, customer remediation, and other milestones.
  • Analyze data and perform effective challenges to support the First Line of Defense in developing robust processes and controls.
  • Oversee and support the maintenance of a robust control environment to monitor third-party risk.
  • Develop and maintain strong working relationships with business partners and internal stakeholders, including other Global Risk and Compliance colleagues, General Counsel’s Organization, Control Management, Independent Compliance Testing, Privacy, and Internal Audit Group.

Qualifications

  • Demonstrated proficient knowledge of U.S. Consumer open-end credit laws and regulations and banking regulations governing credit card activities and their impact on products, operations, and services.
  • Ability to research, assess, and determine regulatory impact on business initiatives and influence decisions accordingly.
  • Strong leadership skills and proven ability to influence decisions, communicate, and collaborate effectively at all levels of the organization.
  • Strong interpersonal skills to support business partners and proven ability to develop and grow relationships.
  • Ability to independently identify and effectively communicate compliance risks and requirements to all levels of staff and management.
  • Demonstrated ability to make decisions independently, work well under pressure, meet deadlines, and handle multiple tasks while prioritizing work in a deadline-intensive environment.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Prior credit card industry, compliance, legal, or risk experience.
  • Bachelor’s Degree strongly preferred.
  • Employment eligibility to work with American Express in the United States is required; the company will not pursue visa sponsorship for this position.
