About the role
This position will operate on a remote, contractual basis. MakeUseOf (MUO) is one of the largest technology publications on the web, aiming to equip all readers—whether newcomers or seasoned veterans—with the tools they need to make the most of their technology. We simplify complex topics into approachable, practical, and engaging guides for the average reader, covering home automation, DIY hardware, and related tech.
The Home section explores the intersection of practical technology, home automation, and DIY hardware, including:
- Power tools & battery ecosystems (Ryobi, Milwaukee, DeWalt)
- Smart home sensors (occupancy, motion, contact) & hubs
- Smart home protocols (Matter, Zigbee, Z-Wave)
- Home networking infrastructure (Cat6/Cat6a cabling, Ethernet drops)
- Display & audio cabling (HDMI standards, AV routing)
- Workshop tech & practical DIY upgrades
MUO covers general-audience home tech; we do not write in-depth guides targeting professional electricians or commercial installers.
Responsibilities
- Write consistently and meet assigned deadlines.
- Pitch ideas and work with editors to refine them. While you may also claim editor-generated ideas, we prioritize pitches from your own interests and expertise.
- Stay up-to-date on the latest tech news, products, and updates.
- Work within a CMS: adhere to style guidelines, format images, add links, and follow editorial processes.
Requirements
- Relevant experience in writing and editing.
- A self-starting attitude: willingness to pitch and work on ideas without prompting.
- Knowledge across a variety of tech, including first-hand use of products, platforms, and gear.
- Basic SEO knowledge is preferred, but clear writing and audience understanding come first.
Application Requirements
- CV and Cover Letter.
- Links to previously published work.
- In your cover letter, address:
- Why you want to write for MUO.
- What makes you the right fit for this role (touch on previous experience and passion for home tech).
Screening questions may be included in the application process.
