Major Down Service Technician - Texas First Rentals

About the Role

The Major Down Service Technician performs maintenance and repairs on complex mechanical, electrical, hydraulic, and diesel systems for a variety of rental and customer equipment and tools. This role requires a high degree of independent judgment, advanced inspections, diagnoses, and repairs of heavy equipment or related components while working as part of a team to meet customer needs and departmental goals.

Responsibilities

• Model, promote, and reinforce the company’s Values Based Leadership (VBL) tools and processes.
• Monitor physical requirements for work completion (facilities, tools, environmental) and communicate needs to supervisor.
• Troubleshoot and diagnose equipment malfunctions and failures.
• Perform quality control and assurance inspections of completed tasks.
• Disassemble and assemble machine components to manufacturer’s specifications using hand tools, pneumatic tools, and specialized tooling.
• Rebuild, repair, recondition, and maintain equipment and components.
• Plan and control the cost of repair jobs.
• Complete parts orders and identify parts for return.
• Provide task and behavior-oriented oversight, mentoring, and training to junior technicians.
• Maintain good customer relations and communicate customer needs to shop management.
• Keep company equipment in good, clean, and orderly condition.
• Work safely at all times and adhere to all applicable safety policies.
• Adapt schedule to accommodate workload fluctuations and meet customer demands.
• Update job knowledge through educational opportunities (e.g., ProTech Technician Training Paths).
• Perform other duties as assigned.

Requirements

• High school diploma or equivalent, or trade school diploma preferred.
• Four years of work-related skill, knowledge, or experience.
• Own a large and complete assortment of appropriate hand tools; specialized tools may be required.

Skills

• Knowledge of dirt-engaging equipment, aerial, and lifting equipment.
• Advanced diesel and gasoline engine diagnosis and repair.
• Advanced electrical system diagnosis and repair, including the use of schematics.
• Advanced hydraulic system diagnosis and repair, including the use of schematics.
• Advanced A/C system diagnosis and repair.
• Ability to use diagnostic troubleshooting and scan tools to identify root causes of failures.
• Experience with flashing and updating ECM software and configurations.
• Ability to remove, install, adjust, and rebuild heavy equipment components (e.g., engines, pumps, hydraulic motors, controllers, valves, track assemblies).
• Experience with failure analysis on machine components.
• Quality control analysis skills, including testing and inspecting products or processes.
• Ability to operate a forklift and overhead crane.
• Strong reading, writing, and comprehension skills.
• Ability to listen, understand, and communicate information effectively.
• Ability to teach and mentor junior technicians.

Physical Requirements

• Ability to move objects and use abdominal and lower back muscles to provide support over time without fatigue.
• Frequently moves materials or equipment weighing up to 50 pounds.
• Constant movement and use of limbs, requiring good manual dexterity, coordination, and stamina.
• Ability to ascend/descend ladders and work underneath equipment safely.
• Routinely reacts to visual, auditory, and other signals, including alarms and instructions.

Work Environment

• Regularly works indoors around moving mechanical parts; may be exposed to weather extremes (heat, cold, humidity, inclement weather) when working outside.
• Noise level may be loud at times.
• Exposure to small quantities of chemicals, steam, high-pressure water, and high-speed rotating equipment.
• Significant time spent in confined spaces and high places.
