About the Role

The Major Down Service Technician performs maintenance and repairs on complex mechanical, electrical, hydraulic, and diesel systems for a variety of rental and customer equipment and tools. This role requires a high degree of independent judgment, advanced inspections, diagnoses, and repairs of heavy equipment or related components. The position involves teamwork to deliver mechanical services that meet customer needs and achieve departmental goals.

Responsibilities

• Model, promote, and reinforce the company’s Values Based Leadership (VBL) tools and processes.
• Monitor physical requirements for work completion (facilities, tools, environmental) and communicate needs to supervisors.
• Troubleshoot and diagnose equipment malfunctions and failures.
• Perform quality control and assurance inspections of completed tasks.
• Disassemble and assemble machine components to manufacturer specifications using hand tools, pneumatic tools, and specialized tooling.
• Rebuild, repair, recondition, and maintain equipment and components.
• Plan and control the cost of repair jobs.
• Complete parts orders and identify parts for return.
• Provide task and behavior-oriented oversight, mentoring, and training to junior technicians.
• Maintain good customer relations and communicate customer needs to shop management.
• Keep company equipment in good, clean, and orderly condition.
• Work safely at all times and adhere to all applicable safety policies.
• Adapt schedule to accommodate workload fluctuations and meet customer demands.
• Update job knowledge through educational opportunities (e.g., ProTech Technician Training Paths).
• Perform other duties as assigned.

Requirements

• High school diploma or equivalent; trade school diploma preferred.
• Four years of work-related skill, knowledge, or experience.
• Owns a large and complete assortment of appropriate hand tools; specialized tools may be required.

Skills

• Knowledge of dirt-engaging equipment, aerial, and lifting equipment.
• Advanced diesel and gasoline engine diagnosis and repair.
• Advanced electrical system diagnosis and repair, including use of schematics.
• Advanced hydraulic system diagnosis and repair, including use of schematics.
• Advanced A/C system diagnosis and repair.
• Ability to use diagnostic troubleshooting and scan tools to identify root causes of failures.
• Experience with flashing and updating ECM software and configurations.
• Ability to remove, install, adjust, and rebuild heavy equipment components (e.g., engines, pumps, hydraulic motors, controllers, valves, track assemblies).
• Experience with failure analysis on machine components.
• Quality control analysis skills, including testing and inspecting products or processes.
• Ability to operate a forklift and overhead crane.
• Strong reading, writing, and verbal communication skills.
• Ability to teach and mentor junior technicians.

Physical Requirements

• Ability to move objects and use abdominal/lower back muscles to support weight over time without fatigue.
• Frequently moves materials or equipment weighing up to 50 pounds.
• Constant movement and use of limbs; requires good manual dexterity, coordination, and stamina.
• Ability to ascend/descend ladders and work underneath equipment safely.
• Routinely reacts to visual, auditory, and other signals, including alarms and instructions.

Work Environment

• Regularly works indoors around moving mechanical parts; may be exposed to weather extremes (heat, cold, humidity, inclement weather).
• Noise levels may be loud at times.
• Exposure to small quantities of chemicals, steam, high-pressure water, and high-speed rotating equipment.
• Significant time spent in confined spaces and high places.
