About the Role

We are seeking a faculty member to teach primarily in materials science for students in the Chemistry Department at Université Claude Bernard Lyon 1. The role involves specialized instruction in the Master's program in Chemistry and Materials Science, covering topics such as semiconductors (growth and properties), thin films, epitaxy, material characterizations and properties, and nanotechnologies. The successful candidate will integrate concepts of ecodesign, environmental impact, and circular economy into their teaching. Additional teaching opportunities may include undergraduate courses and work-integrated learning programs. Broad expertise in materials and inorganic chemistry is highly valued.

The recruited individual may also take on pedagogical responsibilities, such as overseeing course units (UE) and internships.

Responsibilities

  • Teach courses, tutorials (TD), and practical sessions (TP) in materials science for chemistry students.
  • Develop and deliver specialized instruction in the Master’s program, focusing on materials-related topics.
  • Incorporate ecodesign, environmental impact, and circular economy principles into teaching materials.
  • Teach in undergraduate programs and work-integrated learning formats.
  • Assume pedagogical responsibilities, including oversight of course units and internships.

Research Focus

The Laboratory of Multimaterials and Interfaces (LMI) specializes in chemical vapor-phase deposition and, since 2012, ultra-thin films via Atomic Layer Deposition (ALD). The Thin Films (COM) team operates seven ALD reactors (five custom-built, two commercial) and designs functional coatings based on metal oxides/semiconductors (e.g., ZnO, MgZnO, ZnO:Al, Ga₂O₃, Al₂O₃, TiO₂, ZrO₂) or boron nitride for applications in optics, environmental science, and electronics.

Key research areas include protection and encapsulation, such as safeguarding pigments and utilitarian ceramics, anti-corrosion barriers, and encapsulation of nanomaterials and electronic components. The team prioritizes reducing coating toxicity and developing eco-friendly alternatives.

The recruited researcher will lead growth development and investigate growth-structure-property relationships, with a focus on surface chemistry, particularly precursor-surface interactions during ALD. They will propose innovative, low-toxicity functional materials and fabricate protective films with an emphasis on sustainability in both process and performance. Experience in life-cycle assessment of materials is highly desirable.

Requirements

  • Background in materials chemistry or inorganic chemistry, with experience in ALD or CVD.
  • Proficiency in characterizing thin films (optical, electrical, structural properties).
  • Strong interest in surface chemistry and precursor-surface interactions in ALD.
  • Commitment to developing sustainable, low-toxicity materials and processes.
  • Experience in life-cycle assessment of materials is a significant asset.
