Distinguishing Features of Work
This is work in the maintenance and replacement of residential water meters and associated electronic transmittal devices. These employees perform semiskilled maintenance tasks or assist skilled workers in the performance of maintenance work. The primary emphasis of the job is on the performance of a variety of tasks which require general mechanical ability rather than a high degree of skill in any particular trade. Work is supervised and inspected while in process and upon completion by a supervisor.
Examples of Work Performed
- Compares manual and electronic meter readings
- Inspects water meters and electronic reading devices, makes notes of leaks or repairs which require attention, and make minor repairs in the field
- Replaces residential water meters and electronic transmittal devices
- Use electronic device such as a tablet to retrieve and input information
- Completion of work assignments will require the operation of a vehicle
Requirements of Work
- Ability to learn, within a reasonable period of time, the procedures for reading water meters and the locations of streets in the city
- Ability to accurately retrieve and record information in an electronic device
- Ability to deal with customers in a tactful and courteous manner
- Working knowledge of the methods, practices, tools and materials used in maintenance work and of related occupational hazards and safety precautions
- Ability to use hand tools, portable power tools, and equipment needed in maintenance and repair work
- Ability to replace a residential meter
- Ability to work while on hands and knees
- Ability to work outdoors in inclement weather and tolerate the occasional threat of unfriendly pets/animals in the community
- Ability to work in confined spaces, such as vaults, while wearing the appropriate safety equipment
- Ability to push/pull up to 70 pounds of force
- Ability to lift and carry bulky items weighing up to 60 pounds
- Ability to walk up to five miles, occasionally over rough or uneven terrain, over a period up to 6 hours daily, stopping, squatting, and straightening as needed to read meters, record information, and continue walking
- Ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships with associates, representatives of outside agencies, and the public
- Ability to communicate clearly and effectively, both orally and in writing
- Ability to acquire and maintain a valid Kansas Driver's License
