About the role
This position involves the inspection and maintenance of portable fire extinguishers, including installation, rebuilding, recharging, and re-tagging during annual inspections. Other responsibilities include maintaining records, identifying deficiencies, ensuring compliance with safety codes, and supporting the Fire Safety program.
Responsibilities
- Perform annual inspections and tagging of fire extinguishers
- Identify and address damaged, discharged, obstructed, expired, or missing fire extinguishers
- Recharge and conduct hydrostatic tests on fire extinguishers
- Maintain inspection tags, records, and documentation
- Conduct surveys to determine proper extinguisher placement and accessibility
- Install, relocate, and maintain fire extinguisher cabinets, signage, and mounting brackets
- Support other units within the Office of Fire Safety
- Make minor repairs to building electrical and plumbing related to fire protection systems
- Make minor repairs to building masonry, woodwork, flooring, and walls, and firestopping
- Visual inspect public buildings, structures, and equipment to assess and check for defects, malfunctions, and hazardous conditions
- Operate a motor vehicle to travel to and from work sites
Requirements
- Three years of full-time satisfactory experience as a mechanic, journeyperson, or helper in the electrical trades, mechanical trades, or construction/maintenance of buildings
- Sufficient full-time training or education in the electrical, mechanical, or construction trades to make up the equivalent of three years of acceptable experience
- Two years of full-time satisfactory experience as described in "1" above plus sufficient full-time training or education to make up the equivalent of three years of acceptable experience
- Six months of experience will be credited for each year of full-time acceptable training or education
Qualifications
- A Certificate of Fitness for Portable Fire Extinguisher Servicing (W-96), issued by the New York City Fire Department, must be obtained within six months of assignment
- A Certificate of Fitness for Supervision of Sprinkler Systems (S-12), issued by the New York City Fire Department, must be maintained for the duration of assignment
- A Certificate of Fitness for Supervision of Standpipe Systems (S-13), issued by the New York City Fire Department, must be maintained for the duration of assignment
