Maintenance Worker

About the Role

A full-time Maintenance Worker position in the Public Works Department, operating light to moderately heavy vehicles and equipment. This role involves inspecting equipment, performing repairs to city infrastructure, assisting with traffic control, and responding to emergency situations, including snow and ice removal.

Responsibilities

• Operates single axle or one-ton truck with spreader and front and wing plows to clear streets of snow and ice, including mounting equipment, hooking up hoses, and securing straps.
• Cleans and performs maintenance on equipment at the end of each shift.
• Operates tandem axle truck as a backup or substitute for regular route drivers.
• Fills cracks in asphalt streets using a melter applicator machine, involving lifting 50 lb. blocks and long periods of walking.
• Operates or assists with a truck-mounted asphalt patching "hot box" machine for street repairs, including cleaning, preparing, and compacting asphalt.
• Sets up construction signs and directs traffic safety around work sites as a flag-person.
• Operates tandem or single axle trucks to haul materials to and from repair sites, loading materials by hand or with equipment.
• Occasionally operates skid steers and wheel loaders.
• Assists in fabricating and installing traffic control signs using computerized design software and sign installation trucks.
• Conducts maintenance inventories of traffic control devices using automated databases.
• Assists street light technicians with tasks such as manual digging, installing poles, and changing light fixtures.
• Performs pre-operation inspections, replenishes fluid levels, and completes log books for equipment.
• Replaces small items such as lights, hoses, and belts, and reports malfunctioning equipment.
• Operates machinery safely according to manufacturer guidelines and performs routine maintenance and minor repairs.
• Performs shop work to prepare equipment for use, including limited use of a cutting torch and minor mechanical repairs.
• Operates forklifts as needed.
• Responds to resident inquiries regarding driveway cleaning due to construction activity.
• Removes or paints over graffiti on public works structures.
• Performs maintenance at public works facilities, including painting, mowing, sweeping, and trash pickup.
• Delivers handbills door to door.
• Repairs or replaces concrete structures (sidewalks, curbs, ditch liners, bridge decks, and catch basins) using tools such as concrete saws, jackhammers, and shovels.
• Constructs forms, pours, and finishes concrete.
• Assists with construction activities such as fencing installation and storm pipe placement.
• Uses hand tools to apply road patch, including shovels, lute rakes, and picks.
• Performs ditching and other construction activities, including grading, sod placement, and watering.
• Removes debris from catch basins, storm drains, and culvert pipes using hand tools.
• Clears roadways of brush and tree limbs using a chainsaw, loads brush onto vehicles, and feeds brush into chippers.

Requirements

• No educational requirements.
• Must be at least 18 years of age.
• Obtain a valid Class A commercial driver's license with air brake and tanker endorsements within six months of hire.
• Obtain ATSSA or IMSA Construction Flagger and Work Zone Safety Certification within 12 months of hire.
• Must maintain an insurable driving record.
• No prior experience required.

Schedule

Normal work hours: 7:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., Monday through Friday. Must be available to work additional hours as needed, including during emergencies or for snow and ice removal.

Pay

Salary Range: Grade A $19.37 - $21.52 per hour.
