Maintenance Utility Mechanic
About the role
The Facilities Maintenance Division of the Public Works Department seeks an experienced Maintenance Utility Mechanic to maintain, repair, diagnose, and troubleshoot HVAC/R equipment and systems. Duties may also include maintaining other utility, plumbing, electrical, and mechanical equipment and systems.
Responsibilities
- Maintain, repair, diagnose, and troubleshoot HVAC/R equipment and systems.
- Maintain preventative maintenance schedules on filters and moving parts.
- Replace belts and make adjustments on balancing controls.
- Maintain and repair plumbing systems, including valves and fixtures.
- Inspect and repair restricted drains and sewer lines.
- Install and remove sewer, gas, and waterlines.
- Inspect and repair sheet metal duct work.
- Inspect and maintain security lighting equipment.
- Troubleshoot and make minor electrical repairs.
- Inspect and maintain automatic clock systems and civil defense sirens.
- Follow safe work procedures.
- Report equipment malfunctions, needed repairs, and safety/hygiene infractions to supervisor.
- Confer with supervisors on job priorities, work progress, and maintenance and repair problems.
- Respond to emergency or complaint calls.
- Promote the City's Mission to make Concord a city of the highest quality by providing responsive, cost-effective, and innovative government services.
Requirements
- Technical knowledge and experience in maintaining mechanical systems, especially HVAC/R, and basic electricity and plumbing.
- Experience with construction-related utility work.
- A keen eye and attention to detail.
- Highest level of education: Bachelor's Degree.
- At least 4 years of related journey-level experience in the maintenance and repair of mechanical equipment.
Qualifications
- Working knowledge of standard practices, terms, and procedures for air conditioning, heating, ventilating, and other mechanical equipment.
- Ability to skillfully inspect, maintain, and repair such equipment.
- Ability to read and interpret related plans, drawings, and specifications.
- Ability to plan and lay out work effectively.
- Ability to accurately estimate labor and materials associated with the work.
- Ability to understand and carry out oral and written instructions.
- Ability to establish and maintain cooperative and effective relationships with those contacted in the course of work.
Skills
- Skilled in the maintenance and repair of HVAC/R equipment.
- Proficient in reading and interpreting related plans, drawings, and specifications.
- Capable of planning and laying out work effectively.
- Able to accurately estimate labor and materials.
- Skilled in understanding and carrying out oral and written instructions.
- Able to establish and maintain cooperative and effective relationships.

Examples of duties include, but are not limited to:
- Inspects, maintains, and repairs air conditioning and heating units, including thermostatic controls, regulators, valves, switches, and motors.
- Maintains a preventative maintenance inspection and service schedule on filters and moving parts, replaces belts, and makes adjustments on balancing controls.
- Maintains and repairs restricted drains and sewer lines and may install and remove sewer, gas, and waterlines.
- Repairs and installs sheet metal duct work.
- Inspects on a scheduled basis and maintains park, parking lot, and building security lighting equipment.
- Troubleshoots and makes minor electrical repairs; replaces photocells, re-lamps tennis courts and ball fields.
- Inspects, maintains, and trouble-shoots automatic clock systems and civil defense sirens.
- Follows safe work procedures.
- Reports equipment malfunctions, needed repairs, and safety/hygiene infractions to supervisor.
- Confers with supervisors on job priorities, work progress, and maintenance and repair problems.
- Responds to emergency or complaint calls.
- Promotes the City's Mission to make Concord a city of the highest quality by providing responsive, cost-effective, and innovative government services.
