Maintenance Technician - Mechanical (METTS)

This position supports our NASA customer on the Marshall Engineering Technicians and Trades Support contract (METTS).
About the role
This position is responsible for maintaining and repairing mechanical components for CNC Machines, Mills, Lathes, and other equipment within a large machine shop. Responsibilities include installing, repairing, rebuilding, and maintaining a wide variety of machines to ensure efficient operation. Work involves 3-phase electricity and high voltage systems. Occasional overtime and second or third shift support may be required for 24/7 onsite or on-call support based on customer needs and contract requirements.
Responsibilities
- Examine machines and mechanical equipment to diagnose sources of trouble
- Dismantle or partly dismantle machines and perform repairs using hand tools in scraping and fitting parts
- Check wear on bearings, gears, belts, chains, couplings, and shafts
- Replace broken or defective parts with items obtained from stock
- Lubricate moving parts, adjust alignments, and replace worn mechanical components
- Dismantle machines to replace or rebuild components such as pumps, compressors, gearboxes, conveyors, and hydraulic/pneumatic cylinders
- Communicate specifications for major repairs or parts needed
- Clean machines, maintain shop areas, organize parts and tools, and support installation of new equipment from a mechanical standpoint
Requirements
- Rounded training and experience usually acquired through a formal apprenticeship or equivalent training and experience
- Ability to lift up to twenty pounds on an occasional basis
- Ability to sit or stand for extended periods of time
- May require walking, bending, climbing stairs, stooping, lifting, and navigating shop/machine work areas
- Must be able to bend, stoop, or lift occasionally with or without reasonable accommodation
- All positions supporting the METTS III contract are contingent upon successful completion of NASA medical screenings at the beginning of employment and annually thereafter
- Subject to a pre-employment background check and must meet eligibility for a Public Trust background investigation for government-issued credentials and IT access
- Must pass a security background check per Redstone Arsenal/MSFC requirements
- Must provide two (2) forms of Federal I-9 documents and a REAL ID-compliant identification to gain access to RSA and MSFC (name must match on both forms of ID, be original, and unexpired)

- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- Previous experience with NASA or similar work environments
Work Environment
- Environmentally controlled, heated, and cooled shop area subject to machinery noise
- Laboratory, test environments, test stands, and possible confined spaces
- Occasional outdoor work
