About the role
An entry-level position that requires participation in a skills-based training course. The associate must pass specific training sessions by defined dates after the date of hire. Once trained, performs skilled duties of a maintenance mechanic, including preventive, predictive, and corrective maintenance of plant equipment and facilities. Successful associates will complete additional training through the Charleston Water System Maintenance Technician Apprenticeship Program.
Responsibilities
- Performs skilled duties of moderate difficulty, including alignment, bearings, seals, lubrication, drives, mechanical principles, torque, fasteners, plumbing, piping, and pumps.
- Assists with complex assignments in skilled labor, such as maintenance of diesel or gasoline-powered generator and pump systems.
- Performs general maintenance and repair of machinery and related plant equipment, including valves, pumps, gear trains, speed reducers, and hydrants.
- Repairs, maintains, and operates power-operated machines such as lift trucks, backhoes, tractor mowers, and/or bobcats.
- Uses proper measurement tools to align rotating elements.
- Works with chemicals and maintains MSDS chemical safety standards.
- Performs welding (MIG, TIG, ARC, etc.), grinding, or cutting operations on ferrous and non-ferrous metals and other materials as required.
- Performs preventive, predictive, and corrective maintenance activities on plant equipment and facilities, including vibration analysis, oil analysis, HVAC, plumbing, lighting/electrical, office furnishings, grounds keeping, and custodial tasks.
- May be required to work during emergency conditions.
- Reads and uses blueprints, diagrams, and technical manuals to accomplish job assignments.
- Operates shop equipment proficiently.
- Documents and keeps accurate records.
- May be required to participate in intra/inter-departmental cross-training.
- May be subject to 24-hour on-call availability.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
Requirements
- Ability to communicate effectively in writing, verbally, and via two-way radio, including comprehension of complex oral and written instructions.
- Ability to express and receive detailed information through oral communication and make fine distinctions in sound for adjustments on machine parts.
- Ability to communicate verbal instructions quickly, loudly, and effectively in emergency situations.
- Ability to observe and comprehend computer screens and software for generating reports, specifications, memos, and letters.
- Ability to observe repairs and field work in progress.
- Ability to distinguish colors in the color spectrum, such as reading color codes on resistors.
- Subject to noise levels requiring shouting to be heard above ambient noise; hearing protection required.
- Frequently positions self to move, traverse, and lift up to 50 lbs; objects over 50 lbs require a two-person operation.
- Ability to reach, pull, handle documents, tools, and equipment as required for routine tasks.
- Ability to turn valve operator wheels and chain mechanisms.
- Occasionally exerts up to 50 lbs of force and/or up to 20 lbs frequently, and/or up to 10 lbs constantly to move objects.
- Routinely ascends/descends ladders, stairs, and ramps up to thirteen stories high.
- Ability to work at elevated heights as needed.
- Ability to traverse uneven ground while safely maneuvering wheeled equipment.
- Ability to work independently and in internal/external environmental conditions, including exposure to fumes, odors, dusts, gases, etc.; PPE required.
- May be required to wear a respirator and/or self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA).
- Ability to maneuver large valve operator wheels and chain mechanisms.
- Ability to operate and maintain motor vehicles and heavy equipment, such as backhoes.
- Exposure to vibrations and oscillating movements of extremities or whole body.
- Ability to navigate restricted spaces such as chemical pits and spiral stairwells.
- Must be able to wear Personnel Protective Equipment (PPE) as defined in the Job Safety Analysis (JSA).
Qualifications
This is an entry-level position. The associate must successfully complete the Charleston Water System Maintenance Technician Apprenticeship Program, which may include:
- Formal classroom training with a local technical college.
- Classroom and correspondence courses at the work site.
- On-the-job training with a qualified trainer.
- Independent learning, work assignments, and skills demonstration tests.
All training completions have effective deadlines. Failure to qualify on training requirements may result in termination. Prior work record should indicate dependability and conscientiousness.
Pay
Maintenance Technician II
- Salary Range: $49,192.00 ($23.65/hr) - $73,798.40 ($35.48/hr)
- Hiring Range: $49,192.00 ($23.65/hr) - $61,484.80 ($29.56/hr)
Candidates with the following may be placed at Grade 106:
- Three years’ experience in maintenance repair or equivalent education in the designated trades area.
- High school diploma or GED required.
- Completion of one year of the CWS Maintenance Technician Apprenticeship Program (failure to complete may result in termination).
- Depending on qualifications, candidates may be required to complete an abbreviated track of the apprenticeship program.
Maintenance Technician III
- Salary Range: $57,366.40 ($27.58/hr) - $88,940 ($42.76/hr)
- Hiring Range: $57,366.40 ($27.58/hr) - $71,718.40 ($34.48/hr)
Candidates with the following may be placed at Grade 108:
- Four years’ experience in maintenance repair or equivalent education in the designated trades area.
- High school diploma or GED required.
- Completion of two years of the CWS Maintenance Technician Apprenticeship Program (failure to complete may result in termination).
- Depending on qualifications, candidates may be required to complete an abbreviated track of the apprenticeship program.
Skills
- Valid South Carolina Driver's License required; Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) Class A desirable.
- OSHA and departmental safety training as required.
- Skills-based training and Standard Operating Instructions (SOI) per department requirements.
- Knowledge of ISO 14001 standards for department and company.
