Maintenance Technician II

Supports the FedEx industrial maintenance of material handling to complete preventative and predictive maintenance and repair of material handling systems. Utilizes prescribed processes related to mechanical power transmission, electrical, PLC/controls, welding/fabrication, and other industrial maintenance systems. May troubleshoot component and systems issues.

Responsibilities

• Provides preventative and predictive maintenance, troubleshooting, and repair of material handling systems with demonstrated proficiency in mechanical power transmission and electrical, and working knowledge of PLC/controls and welding/fabrication.
• Adheres to all applicable safety standards; promotes a safe work environment by attending safety meetings, required trainings, and addressing safety concerns.
• Interprets electrical or mechanical schematics, manufacturer’s manuals, and engineering specifications to troubleshoot, diagnose, and repair system faults or determine escalation.
• Responds to sort calls to diagnose problems and make repairs.
• Utilizes Enterprise Asset Management (EAM) software to enter and retrieve prescribed data.
• Diagnoses and troubleshoots mechanical, electrical, and/or PLC/controls failures with complex skills.
• May rely on higher-level Technicians for complex control systems issues.
• May read PLCs and burn EEPROMs.
• May assist lower-level technicians.
• May develop scopes of work and project plans for small-scale local projects.
• May be required to work a flexible schedule, including all days and shifts as dictated by business needs.
• Performs other duties as assigned.

Examples of Expected Skills

• Mechanical:
  • Understands power transmission concepts (e.g., gear ratios, service factor, horsepower, frame size) to repair/replace failed gearboxes or motors when correct replacement parts are unavailable.
  • Understands mechanical design concepts to replace failed pulleys and bearings with non-matching replacements without impacting conveyor performance (speed, torque, etc.).
  • Can read, interpret, and create or modify mechanical drawings.
• Electrical:
  • Uses a digital multimeter to resistance test de-energized circuits.
  • Troubleshoots and diagnoses both power and control branches of motor control circuits.
  • Reads, interprets, and creates or modifies electrical drawings/schematics.
• PLC/Controls:
  • Goes online with PLC processors to aid in troubleshooting.
  • Burns EEPROMs.
  • Understands PLC networks (e.g., ControlNet, DeviceNet).
• Welding or Fabrication:
  • Performs MIG, stick, and TIG welding in all positions.
  • Understands the difference between structural and non-structural welds and when to apply them.
  • Repairs broken components where factors like position or load may impact the repair (e.g., motor mounting plates, conveyor legs).
  • Uses vertical mill/drill and other machining tools.

Requirements

• High School Diploma or GED required.
• Certificates in Industrial Maintenance/Mechatronics, electrical, or mechanical trade, or an associate degree in a related area preferred.
• Two (2) years of experience in Industrial Maintenance/Mechatronics with competency in at least two specialty skills (mechanical power transmission, electrical, or PLC/Controls), and basic welding/fabrication skills required.
• Related military experience will be considered.
• In lieu of experience, an associate degree in an Industrial Maintenance/electrical/mechanical trade or related certificates may be considered equivalent.

Skills

• Ability to follow procedures as directed by work orders or high-level technicians/management.
• Ability to utilize Enterprise Asset Management (EAM) software to enter and retrieve prescribed data.
• Ability to solve basic mechanical or electrical problems, including understanding basic engineering formulas.
• Ability to diagnose mechanical power transmission and electrical issues by troubleshooting at multiple component levels.
• Effective verbal and written communication within own department, with peers, managers, and outside vendors to convey technical data and needs.
• Ability to follow detailed instructions.
• Proficiency in software, including Microsoft Office suite and other web-based applications.
• Time management and organizational skills.

Job Conditions

• Use of hand tools and possibly power tools.
• May work in hot or cold temperatures.
• May need to stand, walk, bend, stoop, and squat.

Pay

$20.35 - $47.47 per hour.
