Maintenance Technician

About the Role

As a Maintenance Technician at Pet Food Express, you will play a crucial role in maintaining and enhancing the appearance, functionality, and safety of our retail stores. Reporting to the Facilities Manager, you will handle all aspects of maintenance, installation, inspection, and repair for Pet Food Express retail locations, Corporate Offices, and Warehouse in the Bay Area and Southern California. This position requires regular travel between work sites, with a company van and equipment provided.

We are seeking a dedicated Maintenance Technician to service our retail locations in the South Bay area—San Mateo, Santa Clara, San Francisco, and Alameda counties, including our Carmel location—with flexibility to perform occasional work in the Greater Bay Area as needed.

Responsibilities

• Complete routine maintenance, inspections, repairs, and duties at PFE locations while providing efficient solutions to problems.
• Ensure all assigned work orders are managed to completion.
• Respond to maintenance calls, including repairs for PFE Pet Wash equipment (training provided) and urgent calls such as providing dry ice when store freezers fail.
• Support the Facilities department with construction and special projects.
• Assist the IT Department and other cross-functional teams with installations as needed.
• Document and maintain accurate records of maintenance activities, purchases, repairs, and service history in work orders.
• Report to the Maintenance Manager regarding replenishment needs for supplies and special tools.
• Ensure vendor-completed projects meet PFE standards and provide vendors access to stores during closed hours.
• Participate in rotating on-call availability for emergency maintenance repairs, such as store window break-ins.
• Ensure compliance with all safety, maintenance regulations, and departmental standards.
• Travel between Pet Food Express locations, typically within a 25-50 mile radius, to perform maintenance tasks.
• Communicate effectively with store personnel, management, and external contractors/vendors to coordinate maintenance activities and resolve issues.
• Perform other installations and duties as assigned.

Requirements

• 3+ years of experience in a building maintenance role, preferably within a retail or commercial environment.
• Excellent plumbing, electrical, and handyman skills with the ability to diagnose, repair, and resolve issues efficiently.
• Good understanding of tools and equipment used for maintenance tasks.
• Strong problem-solving skills with a proactive approach to identifying and addressing maintenance needs.
• Ability to work nights and weekends on a rotating on-call basis.
• Excellent verbal communication, customer service, and interpersonal skills.
• Ability to work independently with solid time management skills.
• Tech-savvy with strong ability to use computers, smartphones, and mobile devices for communication, work management, and research.
• Flexibility to work in a fast-paced environment and adapt to changing priorities.
• Experience using work order management systems is a plus.
• Valid driver’s license, clean driving record, and willingness to travel between work sites.
• Ability to lift and carry heavy objects up to 75 lbs, stand and walk frequently, climb ladders, and perform physically demanding tasks.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or equivalent; college or trade school desirable.
• Relevant certifications or vocational training is a plus.

Pay

The salary for this position is expected to be $40.00/hr - $42.00/hr. Starting salary is determined based on local market rate, candidate experience, skills, and internal compensation practices.
