Position Summary

Under the direction of the Shift Supervisor, the Maintenance Technician will perform a variety of independent duties involving the diagnosis, repair, and maintenance of gas, diesel, and battery-electric vehicle equipment.

Responsibilities

  • Perform skilled mechanical maintenance and repair work on all Link Transit vehicles, including gas, diesel, electric, and propane-powered units.
  • Respond promptly to emergency situations and roadside breakdowns in all weather conditions.
  • Inspect, diagnose, repair, and maintain mechanical systems, air brake systems, air conditioning units, and electronic/electrical systems on all vehicles.
  • Service and perform preventative maintenance on all vehicles and related equipment.
  • Diagnose, remove, disassemble, and repair diesel and gasoline engines in accordance with manufacturer specifications.
  • Overhaul engines and transmissions as needed.
  • Diagnose, adjust, and repair air brake, hydraulic, steering, suspension, and all related components.
  • Adapt to and utilize all available tools, including scan tools and other troubleshooting resources.
  • Conduct periodic road testing of vehicles after repairs to verify safe operating condition.
  • Support and contribute to Link Transit’s commitment to providing a safe and healthy workplace; all employees share responsibility for workplace safety.

Qualifications

  • Education and Experience: Graduation from high school, supplemented by college-level technical skills training in the mechanical maintenance of gasoline- and diesel-powered vehicles. Four (4) years of experience in maintenance repair of gasoline and diesel-powered vehicles, including hands-on experience repairing mechanical, air, hydraulic, air conditioning, and electrical systems. Electric bus maintenance experience preferred but not required.
  • Knowledge: Of skilled diagnostic, maintenance, and repair procedures applicable to gasoline and diesel-powered public transportation vehicles. Operation of electronic diagnostic and testing equipment, hand and power tools used to maintain and repair mass transit vehicles. Workplace health and safety regulations.
  • Ability: To perform skilled, journey-level mechanical maintenance and repair, including overhauls, on gasoline- and diesel-powered mass transit vehicles. Repair, adjust, test, and maintain mechanical, air, hydraulic, air conditioning, electronic, and electrical systems. Repair and replace malfunctioning parts. Operate electronic diagnostic and testing equipment and tools used to repair/maintain transit vehicles. Provide training and work direction to others as assigned. Observe workplace health and safety regulations. Maintain records and reports related to work performed. Maintain clean and orderly work areas. Follow oral and written directions. Communicate effectively with others. Establish and maintain cooperative and effective working relationships with others.

Training and Evaluation Period

All newly hired Technicians will be required to complete a minimum of one (1) year of evaluation and on-the-job training. During this period, performance, skill development, and technical proficiency will be evaluated to determine the appropriate Maintenance Technician level assignment within the organization.

Other Requirements

  • Must obtain and maintain a valid Washington State Commercial Class B driver's license with Passenger Endorsement and possess and maintain a good driving record throughout employment.

Working Conditions

  • Work is performed in a vehicle maintenance shop and in the field, including during emergencies.
  • Exposure to noise, fumes, hazardous materials, weather, and traffic hazards is common.
  • Requires the ability to inspect, maintain, and repair vehicles; operate a commercial vehicle; climb in and out of large vehicles; lift up to 75 lbs.; work in cramped or awkward positions; and perform tasks involving bending, reaching, and confined spaces for extended periods.
  • Evening and weekend hours may be required.

  • Retirement: All eligible employees of Link Transit are required to participate in the Washington State Public Employees' Retirement System (PERS). Employees are not covered under the Social Security System except for a 1.45% payment for Medicare. Employees are eligible to participate in a 457 savings plan with an employer match of up to 6.2% of annual compensation plus an additional $1 per hour for eligible employees up to a maximum of 2,080 hours annually paid by Link.
  • Paid Leave: Link Transit provides paid general leave for all eligible employees - accrual starts at 9 hours per pay period at time of hire. Additional leave accrues after every five years of service.
  • Holidays: Link Transit eligible employees enjoy 6 paid holidays plus 4 floating holidays annually.
  • Disability Insurance: Link provides short term and long term disability plus life insurance for eligible employees.
