About the Location

The Lake View Hotel is located at the end of Main Street on historic Mackinac Island. With 80% of the island protected by a Michigan State Park, the island offers abundant outdoor recreational activities alongside a vibrant business community and tourism industry. Mackinac Island is the number one tourist destination in the Midwest, attracting over 10,000 visitors daily. The island is car-free, relying on bicycles, foot traffic, and horses, creating a unique, timeless atmosphere. The hotel employs approximately 30 people during the summer season, from early May through October.

Responsibilities

• Perform routine preventative maintenance and repairs, including guest room calls.
• Follow departmental procedures for repair, maintenance, alteration, and installation work in a safe and neat manner.
• Troubleshoot malfunctions, determine defects, and take corrective action for guest rooms and mechanical equipment.
• Document all work performed, parts needed, and parts used on service requests.
• Maintain all property areas in good repair, providing day-to-day maintenance under the direction of the Chief Engineer.
• Analyze problems, identify solutions, and implement them with available resources in the absence of the Chief Engineer.
• Write routine reports, logs, and correspondence; communicate effectively with guests and associates.
• Support the Chief Engineer in overseeing all engineering functions of the hotel.
• Handle guest room maintenance: plunging toilets, unclogging drains, repairing hardware, plumbing, electrical equipment (e.g., lamps, air conditioners), and cosmetic items.
• Maintain public areas: plunging toilets, unclogging drains, repairing hardware, plumbing, electrical equipment, and cosmetic items.
• Monitor and test fire alarm/life safety systems; handle emergencies involving these systems with full knowledge of operation, fire sprinkler, and emergency power systems.
• Observe and report energy/utility usage; suggest conservation ideas to engineering management.
• Maintain tools and equipment: clean, lubricate, and secure them; ensure tools are returned to the shop and stored properly.
• Respond to emergencies, acting quickly to restore normal operations and protect guests, associates, and the building.
• Follow departmental Job Safety Analysis to maintain a safe work environment; correct hazardous conditions immediately.
• Read, track, and interpret meter/gauge readings; maintain daily activity logs and pass information to other shifts.
• Clean engineering areas as directed; keep workspaces neat and organized.
• Complete assigned work safely and professionally; communicate with supervisors to ensure materials/tools are available.
• Follow up on back-ordered items; update supervisors on assignments; train and advise other engineers as needed.
• Perform structural repairs: masonry, woodwork, furnishings, plaster/plasterboard, painting, and flooring (linoleum, tile, carpet).
• Check fixtures, lighting, and signs for proper operation; maintain spare parts and light bulbs.
• Respond to and complete maintenance work orders promptly.
• Keep work areas (shop and guest rooms) neat and orderly.
• Remain flexible and responsive to scheduling needs.

Requirements

• High school diploma or equivalent.
• One year of trade school or equivalent experience.
• 1–3 years of general technical experience, preferably in hotels or facilities maintenance.
• Ability to operate hand and power tools.
• Capable of reading and interpreting blueprints, specifications, and operating instructions.
• Certified Pool Operator or ability to obtain certification within six months.
• Valid driver’s license.
• Basic working knowledge of general maintenance, HVAC, and safety/security practices.
• Experience with Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook is a plus.
• Desire to continue learning and developing in a specific trade area (e.g., electrical, carpentry).
