About the Role

Performs minor and intermediate maintenance and repair of city building electrical systems and lighting, street lighting, heating and air conditioning systems, and city generators. Also responsible for the care and cleaning of city buildings and related work as required. Work is performed under regular supervision.

Responsibilities

  • Troubleshoot minor and intermediate electrical circuits and lighting issues.
  • Diagnose and repair intermediate problems with heating and air conditioning systems and city generators.
  • Perform monthly on-site inspections and running of generators; complete preventative maintenance (PM) sheets.
  • Perform minor repairs to equipment, such as replacing components, and order/install parts for repairs.
  • Coordinate contract repair work with contractors.
  • Clean and maintain buildings and facilities, including:
    • Sweeping, mopping, and dusting offices and buildings.
    • Washing windows, walls, woodwork, and bathroom fixtures.
    • Operating carpet shampooers; vacuuming and cleaning carpets.
    • Cleaning and supplying restrooms; stripping and sealing floors.
    • Replacing fluorescent light bulbs, exit sign bulbs, ceiling tiles, and air conditioning filters.
  • Operate light automotive equipment; pick up and distribute mail.
  • Gather and dispose of refuse, litter, and trash.
  • Load and unload cleaning and polishing equipment and materials.
  • Prepare cleaning and polishing materials from bulk containers.
  • Assist in setting up buildings and rooms for activities and special events.
  • Maintain streets and sidewalks around the downtown area, keeping them free of debris and trash.
  • Perform routine security tours of assigned buildings and grounds; report unusual observations to a superior; open and close facilities.
  • Assist with snow removal and ice control.
  • Work outside normal working hours during emergencies or stand-by status.

Requirements

  • Any combination of education and experience equivalent to graduation from high school.
  • Considerable experience working on internal combustion engines, electrical circuits, and heating and air conditioning equipment.
  • Possession of a valid North Carolina driver’s license.
  • Pass a criminal background check (required for final candidates).

Skills & Abilities

  • Considerable knowledge of internal combustion engine operation, including the ability to replace minor parts.
  • Semi-skilled in electrical work (indoor and outdoor) and heating/air conditioning repairs.
  • General knowledge of building cleaning practices, supplies, and equipment; ability to use them economically and efficiently.
  • Ability to understand oral and written directions.
  • Ability to read, write, and keep accurate records.
  • Physical ability to perform heavy manual work.
  • Ability to work independently.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates.
