Duties & Responsibilities

  • Performs routine cleaning of the buildings. Duties include cleaning water fountains, doors, kick-plates, walls, floors, switch plates, windows, and countertops.
  • Cleans restrooms, including sinks, toilets, urinals, mirrors, and floors.
  • Removes trash and restocks all restrooms supplies.
  • Ensures all areas are sanitized daily with the proper chemical compound used.
  • Understands and follows supervisor's directions; recognizes and reports problems or potential problems.
  • Performs grounds keeping duties as needed.
  • Keeps entrances, entrance mats, and sidewalks clean and safe around the exterior of the buildings.
  • Experience with using personal protective equipment (PPE).
  • Ability to interpret and understand Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS), chemical usages, and follow recommended dilution ratios.
  • Keeps track of inventory parts on hand for all repairs and/or replacements. Requests parts to be ordered on an "as needed" basis.
  • Maintains, tracks, and ensures tools and equipment are in safe operating condition.
  • Aids in the authorized moving of office furniture, equipment, and other property as needed.
  • Performs inspections and identifies possible safety hazards in or around buildings using the correct procedures to correct these hazards.
  • Performs routine inspections of fire safety equipment such as extinguishers, safety lights, and detectors.
  • Assists with semi-annual fire drills.
  • Assists outside contractors and others as needed and performs minor maintenance repairs as directed.
  • Carries ladders and other equipment; does touch-up painting and minor carpentry work.
  • Changes light bulbs, lighting ballasts, switches, receptacles, etc.
  • Performs maintenance on floors and carpets, as well as uses carpet cleaning machines and grounds keeping equipment.
  • Performs maintenance on air conditioning systems, changes filters, and maintains maintenance logs.
  • Assists with the maintenance of hardware, doors, windows, restroom fixtures, and performs minor carpet repairs.
  • Plumbing duties include but are not limited to: unclogging drains, repairing flush valves, repairing commodes, sinks, urinals, and drinking fountains.
  • Works on doors, door closures, door hinges, and door locks.
  • Completes all necessary paperwork associated with maintenance duties.
  • Aids the Maintenance Superintendent with monitoring or adjusting the Energy Management, Fire Protection, and Security Systems.
  • Aids in the maintenance of all fleet vehicles.
  • Performs all lifting duties in accordance with safe lifting guidelines to ensure limited risk of injury to self, others, and to prevent property damage.
  • Assists in other maintenance tasks as requested.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Knowledge of procedures and methods used in cleaning, floor care, and handling of chemicals and cleaners.
  • Knowledge of procedures/methods used in building, mechanical and fire equipment maintenance or operation.
  • Skill in using power tools.
  • Ability to communicate effectively.
  • Ability to plan, organize and coordinate work assignments.

Minimum Qualifications

  • One (1) year of experience with general custodial responsibilities.
  • One (1) year of experience in the maintenance or repair of buildings, plumbing, mechanical or fire equipment.

Background Screening Requirement

It is the policy of the Florida Department of Education that applicants for employment/volunteer undergo Level 2 background screening in accordance with the requirements of Chapter 435, Florida Statutes, as a condition of employment or being permitted to serve as a volunteer. You will be required to provide your Social Security Number to conduct the required verifications. No applicant for a designated position will be employed, contracted, or permitted to volunteer until the level 2 screening results are received, reviewed, and approved by the Department. Level 2 background screening shall include, but not be limited to, finger printing for all purposes and checks under this requirement, statewide criminal and juvenile records checks through the Florida Department of Law Enforcement, federal criminal records check through the Federal Bureau of Investigation, and local criminal records checks through local law enforcement.
