Maintenance Specialist, Senior (Crew Leader) Concrete

About the role

The Environmental & Street Services Department at the City of Durham seeks individuals who can contribute to the maintenance and improvement of city infrastructure. This position involves managing and repairing various aspects of city property, including roads, vehicles, and facilities.

Responsibilities

• Supervise crews of Maintenance Assistants, Technicians, and Senior Maintenance Specialists in asphalt, concrete, stormwater, and street cleaning sections.
• Operate and maintain heavy equipment such as backhoes, excavators, and dump trucks.
• Perform vehicle and equipment pre/post trip inspections, monitor fluid levels, and perform basic repairs.
• Assist with traffic control device installation and flagging operations.
• Ensure compliance with DOT traffic laws and requirements.
• Communicate work-related needs and issues to supervisors and senior management.
• Document and track time, labor, and materials in CMMS.
• Train and oversee assigned crew members on safety protocols and equipment operation.
• Perform manual labor tasks such as digging ditches, compaction, and leveling earth.
• Utilize laptops, tablets, and Microsoft Word and Outlook programs.
• Maintain and update employee records in the CMMS system.
• Operate service trucks and dump trucks equipped with plows during winter weather operations.

Requirements

• High school diploma or GED equivalency.
• Four (4) or more years of equipment operation/driving experience or technical maintenance experience related to assignment.
• One (1) year of technical training in area of assignment.
• CDL B driver’s license.

Preferred Skills

• Experience rebuilding manhole/basins, placing structures, and cleaning pipes and culverts.
• Proficiency in a Computerized Maintenance Management System (CMMS) such as City Works.
• Knowledge and ability to utilize a laptop and tablet computer.
• Ability to utilize communication and interpersonal skills as applied to interaction with coworkers, supervisors, the general public, and others.
• Experience operating backhoe.

Pay

Hiring Range: $52,903.00 - $82,086.00

Schedule

Regular Hours: 7:00 a.m. - 3:30 p.m. Summer Hours: 6:00 a.m. - 2:30 p.m.

Notes

• This position is devoted to maintaining and repairing City property, vehicles, roads, and traffic systems.
• Incumbents provide specialized paraprofessional and skilled technical maintenance work.
• Decision-making is limited to organizing tasks in more complex operational processes that include coordination of logistics and handling of unanticipated factors within standard policies and procedures to meet established goals.
• Incumbents perform highly technical maintenance work or lead work crews performing basic and complex labor, equipment operation, construction, maintenance, and/or repair tasks.
• Successful applicants will participate in a field assessment to evaluate their ability to proficiently operate a backhoe and excavator.
• Applicants will be required to complete a face-to-face interview and CMMS system assessment.
