Maintenance Operator I - Activity Fields (Part-Time)

Part-time position with the City of Winter Haven Parks and Recreation Division.

About the role

This role involves performing various tasks related to field preparation, turf maintenance, irrigation, and equipment operation. You will be responsible for the upkeep and maintenance of athletic fields, ensuring they are safe, playable, and visually appealing and meet the City’s standards required for sports activities and events.

Responsibilities

• Work in the City’s Parks and Recreation Division providing excellent service to the public maintaining the athletic fields throughout the City.
• Perform manual labor in preparing and maintaining the City’s athletic fields, working outdoors under adverse weather conditions.
• Operate groundskeeping equipment including push and tractor type mowers, edgers, weed-eaters, backpack blowers, and light trucks.
• Remove and replace sod as necessary.
• Mow, irrigate, fertilize, and treat turf with insecticides and pesticides that do not require a license to apply.
• Lay out, recondition, and prepare playing fields; measure and lay out pitcher’s mound, plates, and bases; utilize a field marker machine to line softball, baseball, and football fields.
• Perform cleaning and minor maintenance of facilities and equipment; paint, replace light bulbs, repair fences, sprinkler heads, and pipe systems.
• Set up and take down equipment used on fields.
• Perform general upkeep work including sweeping, mopping, collecting, and disposing of trash and litter.

Requirements

• Two years’ experience in general groundskeeping or labor work.
• Possession of a valid Florida driver's license with a good driving record.
• Absence of non-prescribed controlled substances in the applicant’s system as verified by a laboratory approved by the City of Winter Haven.
• Ability to work a flexible schedule including evenings, weekends, and holidays.

Skills & Abilities

• Knowledge of groundskeeping practices, methods, tools, and equipment.
• Ability to safely operate groundskeeping equipment including push and tractor type mowers, edgers, weed-eaters, backpack blowers, etc.
• Physical agility, strength, and flexibility to perform essential job functions without risking the health and safety of oneself or others.
• Ability to understand and carry out verbal and written instructions.

Pay

$16.80 per hour minimum.
