Position Summary

The Maintenance Mechanic/Welder Supports safe, reliable, and efficient operation of a chemical batch manufacturing plant by performing mechanical maintenance, welding/fabrication, and equipment troubleshooting. Ensures compliance with safety, quality, and environmental requirements while minimizing downtime and maintaining production continuity.

Key Outcomes & Responsibilities

  • Safe & Compliant Welding Execution: Zero safety incidents; 100% compliance with permit-to-work and regulatory requirements.
    • Performs welding activities in accordance with ASME, AWS, and site-specific standards.
    • Follows all safety protocols including hot work permits, PPE, and confined space entry.
    • Welds carbon steel, stainless steel, and alloy piping using SMAW, GTAW, and GMAW processes.
    • Conducts weld repairs and ensures compliance with plant welding standards.
  • High-Quality Fabrication & Repairs: >95% first-pass quality rate; <5% rework due to weld defects.
    • Fabricates and installs pipe spools, supports, and structural components according to P&IDs and isometric drawings.
    • Performs pipe fitting, cutting, beveling, threading, and layout work.
    • Fabricates and repairs piping, vessels, structural supports, and equipment components using appropriate welding techniques (e.g., TIG, MIG, Stick).
    • Conducts visual and dimensional inspections to verify weld integrity and fit-up.
  • Support for Preventive & Corrective Maintenance: On-time completion of scheduled work; reduced downtime due to equipment failures.
    • Executes welding tasks as part of planned maintenance and emergency repairs.
    • Inspects, troubleshoots, and repairs pumps, compressors, gearboxes, valves, agitators, and rotating equipment.
    • Performs preventive and predictive maintenance on mechanical systems.
    • Installs, aligns, and rebuilds mechanical components using precision tools.
  • Documentation & Traceability: 100% documentation accuracy; audit-ready compliance.
    • Completes weld logs, inspection records, and job documentation as required by site protocols and regulatory standards.
    • Documents maintenance work orders and equipment history in the CMMS (e.g., SAP PM) following site requirements.
    • Maintains certification records and ensures qualifications are current.
  • Continuous Improvement & Reliability Support: Contribution to improvement initiatives; reduction in recurring failures.
    • Identifies opportunities to improve weld techniques, material selection, and fabrication methods.
    • Participates in root cause analysis and reliability improvement initiatives.
    • Supports equipment changeouts, shutdowns, and turnarounds to improve long-term reliability.
  • Effective Equipment Support During Outages: Timely completion of equipment changeouts, shutdowns, and turnarounds to support production continuity.
    • Assists with equipment changeouts, shutdowns, and turnarounds.
    • Coordinates with planners and operations to execute work safely and efficiently while minimizing downtime.

Basic Qualifications

  • Education: High School Diploma or equivalent and related trade school or military training; AWS certifications in weld proficiency
  • Job Experience: 4–6 years
  • Technical Skills: Proficiency in TIG, MIG, Stick welding; pipe fitting; blueprint reading; weld inspection
  • Safety Knowledge: Familiarity with hot work permitting, confined space entry, and hazardous materials handling
  • Systems: Basic CMMS usage for work order documentation (e.g., SAP PM)
