Brief Summary

This is an individual contributor position responsible for performing most functions of the preventive and repair maintenance, electrical, electronic and mechanical work for the Utility Division with proficiency. The Maintenance Technician is also responsible for fabrication of fixtures using welding, cutting and soldering.

Essential Functions

  • Test, inspect, repair, troubleshoot and re-assemble basic plant equipment, components, and systems including but not limited to overhead bridge cranes, hoists, gear boxes, forklifts, straddle trucks, company vehicles, pneumatic and mechanical systems, combustion engines electrical and hydraulic systems
  • Perform basic electrical work and assist in highly skilled electrical work
  • Fabricate fixtures using welding, cutting, soldering, and surface hardening applications
  • Communicate with supervisor and other maintenance and production team members via e-mail, phone, and face-to-face
  • Communicate and interact with coworkers in a professional manner
  • Complete record logs including labor, repairs made, equipment, and use of materials on the computer
  • Document the amount of labor used and materials used on each repair in MaintainX
  • Perform calibrations on various equipment
  • Read and follow written and verbal instructions in English
  • Read and write, and count, accurately and legibly
  • Read and interpret basic blueprints
  • Submit 2 safety contact cards on a monthly basis
  • Perform general plant clean up and housekeeping

Essential Tools and Equipment

  • Small hand tools including tape measures, micrometers, saws, drills, riveters, and nail guns
  • Maintain tools and equipment

Important Details About the Role

  • Knowledgeable with plant equipment
  • Knowledgeable with basic testing, troubleshooting, disassembly, inspecting, precise measuring, repair and re-assembly of all plant equipment and components with limited instruction
  • Identify and report equipment abnormalities and safety hazards
  • Must be company tested and authorized to operate a forklift, cranes, genie boom and scissor lift
  • Assist in general plant clean up and housekeeping
  • Associate will indirectly report to the Maintenance Lead person on their respective shift

Required Qualifications of Every Candidate

  • Apprenticeship with accredited school or no experience
  • The ability to read and follow written and verbal instructions in English
  • Proficient with Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook
  • The ability to communicate problems or needs to departmental supervision
  • The ability to communicate and interact with coworkers in a professional manner
  • Pay attention to detail and follow work instructions
  • A high awareness for safety and following all requirements for safety at Valmont (adhere to all Valmont policies and procedures)
  • Required Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) and work in a non-temperature controlled environment, as well as with exposure to outdoors
  • The ability to lift up to 50 pounds, although most frequent lift is up to 30 pounds
  • The ability to be company trained and authorized to operate powered industrial trucks, aerial platforms and bridge cranes in arc flash safety, confined space entry, hazardous energy control, and fall protection
  • The ability to spend 95% of workday standing or walking, bending kneeling, stooping, and climbing
  • Climb and work from ladders, aerial platforms , bridge cranes, and roofs in excess of 80 feet
  • The ability to distinguish colors
  • The ability to work of overtime per week, as needed
  • The ability to be a person of passion and integrity who has the drive to excel and deliver exceptional results

Skill Development

  • Actively pursuing an Associate’s or Technical degree in Industrial Maintenance or related field
  • One (1) or more years with relevant, hands-on experience
  • AWS 1G welding certification
  • Minor PLC programming experience
  • Knowledgeable variable speed drives
  • Computer Software IFSMii, Workforce, Outlook

Decision Making

  • Make decisions whether or not equipment can run safely or needs immediate attention for repairs
  • Make recommendations to supervision and prioritize necessary repairs
  • Service manuals establish standard procedures for some decision making
  • Troubleshoot pneumatic, hydraulic, mechanical, and electrical equipment may require independent judgment at the work site or at additional Valmont sites requesting maintenance assistance

Physical Effort

  • Spend 95% of workday standing or walking, bending kneeling, stooping, and climbing
  • Handle gearboxes on top of machines, changing brakes, motors on cranes, etc.
  • The average weight of objects is 30 pounds
