About the role

This is a highly customer service oriented position in which employees should strive to exceed customer expectations. Perform at a journeyman level to install, repair, assemble and maintain water, sewage, drainage, air, gas, and vacuum systems and related heating equipment in accordance with blueprints, specifications, established practices and pertinent state and local codes.

Responsibilities

  • Estimate time and material costs for projects.
  • Review blueprints and building codes and specifications to determine work details and procedures.
  • Inspect joints, valves, pumps, boilers, heaters, sinks, commodes, tanks, valves, and other plumbing system components to locate malfunctions, and repairs or replaces when necessary.
  • Service and maintain portable water systems, RO systems, building waste and vent systems, and perform scheduled preventative maintenance.
  • Install, connect and test plumbing fixtures such as urinals, water closets, wash basins, sinks and drinking fountains.
  • Monitor and trouble-shoot major plumbing breakdowns by diagnosing, repairing, and replacing systems such as clogged sewer lines, main gas line breakdowns, steam equipment and devices and fire sprinkling systems.
  • Monitor, maintain and service deionized water systems to include maintenance scheduling with vendors.
  • Lay out, order material and install in a neat and professional manner.
  • Install and maintain sterilizers, stills, washers, glass washers, institutional kitchen equipment, swimming pool facilities, mixing valves, water softeners, grease pits and special equipment.
  • Determine routing of pipe and location of such plumbing fixtures, accessories and equipment as inlets, vent pipes, valves, meters, gauges, hangers, brackets and water, sewer, gas and air connections by following and adhering to trade practice specifications, blueprints, sketches and codes.
  • Locate and mark the position of pipe installations, connections, passage holes, and fixtures in structures, using measuring instruments such as rulers and levels.
  • Measure, cut, thread, and bend pipe to required angle, using hand and power tools or machines such as pipe cutters, pipe-threading machines, and pipe-bending machines.
  • Connect pipes and fittings using all appropriate methods such as solder, braze, glue, crimp, pex tubing, etc.
  • Work with glass drain lines.
  • Learn new plumbing techniques as required to remain up-to-date with current and new technologies.
  • Live out and make decisions in line with the Clarkson University values in all daily activities.
  • Operate and work in a safe manner at all times and ensure the highest level of housekeeping.
  • Mentor and lead interns, apprentices and/or student workers.
  • Willingness to take courses and/or training to meet trade specific and University standards.
  • Complete Clarkson Vehicle Safety Checklist before vehicle use.
  • Operate a Clarkson vehicle in accordance with University policy.
  • Perform other related duties incidental to the work described herein.
  • Deliver timely, friendly, and effective service to University faculty, staff and students.
  • Encourage and promote teamwork.
  • Able to gain general knowledge of the campus.
  • Participate in reporting of campus damage and/or safety issues.

Qualifications

  • Minimal Qualifications: High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Preferred Qualifications: Associates degree in plumbing or plumbing related trade.
  • Journeyman’s card in plumbing or plumbing related trade.
  • Four (4) years of journeyman equivalent experience in plumbing.
  • Five (5) or more years of experience of journeyman equivalent experience as a plumber.
  • Must have enthusiasm for the job, a customer service approach and be willing to work in a team environment.
  • Valid NYS driver’s license with a driving record acceptable to meet the University insurance standards.
  • Proficient mathematical skills.
  • Possess general knowledge of the campus layout and building locations.
  • Demonstrated ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with diverse constituencies.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Strong organizational skills are required.
  • Must be able to function under stressful conditions and/or high volume with short turnaround.
