About the role

The Maintenance Mechanic IV maintains and repairs all college electrical, plumbing, heating, and cooling systems, programs and operates building automation systems, and is dedicated to supporting learning-college concepts by developing programs and facilitating activities that promote student success and lifelong learning.

Responsibilities

  • Receive work assignments, work orders, and instructions from the Maintenance Supervisor or the Lead Maintenance Mechanic.
  • Study and interpret mechanical or electrical blueprints, schematics, wiring diagrams, drawings, or sketches to install new equipment or troubleshoot mechanical or electrical problems; plan and determine working procedures and tool and materials requirements.
  • Correct defective mechanical devices and other equipment by disassembling, installing new parts, and refitting; adjust and maintain mechanical equipment.
  • Install air, water, gas, and refrigerant lines; repair and maintain plumbing.
  • Repair and maintain temperature control systems.
  • Repair and maintain all college HVAC systems.
  • Repair and maintain AC & DC electrical systems.
  • Repair and maintain electronic equipment and systems.
  • Operate and program the building automation system.
  • Maintain the college’s swimming pool.
  • Clean boilers, add chemicals to boiler water, cooling towers, and closed water systems; make chemical tests as required and keep boiler house log.
  • May act as lead worker in the absence of the Maintenance Supervisor, the Lead Maintenance Mechanic, or Senior Mechanic.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED.
  • Minimum of eight (8) years of work experience as a skilled maintenance mechanic.
  • Valid driver’s license and ability to qualify as insurable by college liability insurance carrier.
  • Illinois Swimming Pool Operators certificate issued by the Illinois Department of Public Health (within twelve months of employment).
  • EPA approved Universal or Type III Technician Certification (within twelve months of employment).

Preferred Qualifications

  • Moraine Valley Community College approved Heating and Air Conditioning Certificate or equivalent.
  • City of Chicago Stationary Engineer’s License or a related approved apprenticeship and training program.
  • Certificate of Completion of Johnson Controls Metasys EMS System.
  • EPA approved Universal or Type III Technician Certification.

Skills

  • Ability to read and comprehend blueprints and written instructions.
  • Effective communication and ability to respond to college personnel.
  • Basic computational skills.
  • Ability to work independently and exercise good judgment.
  • Knowledge of test equipment, shop machinery, and hand tools to perform diverse repair operations.
  • Knowledge of heating and cooling systems to troubleshoot and make extensive repairs.
  • Knowledge of building automation systems, including basic programming and ability to make modifications.
  • Positive and service-oriented attitude.

Schedule

Full-time, first shift (Monday–Friday, 7:00 a.m. – 3:30 p.m.). On-call for weekend work required. Training hours may differ initially.

Pay

$28.41–$30.00/hour plus shift differential as applicable.
