Maintenance Mechanic II - Papillion Creek WWTP

About the Role

This is skilled journey-level work involving the installation and maintenance of equipment at municipal wastewater treatment plants, flood levees, and pump stations. Employees perform major and minor installation and maintenance tasks and may serve as lead workers on larger, more complex projects.

Responsibilities

• Inspect and diagnose malfunctions in hydraulic, pneumatic, and mechanical equipment to determine repair or replacement needs.
• Install, repair, and maintain wastewater and flood control systems and related equipment, including belt filter systems, pumps, heaters, motors, augers, compressors, mechanical power transmission equipment, plumbing, hydraulic hoses, cylinders, and valves.
• Weld broken or worn parts such as shafts, sprockets, and flight shoes.
• Perform regular preventive maintenance on hydraulic, pneumatic, and mechanical equipment.
• Read and interpret mechanical drawings, schematics, and blueprints of mechanical, hydraulic, and pneumatic designs.
• Prepare daily reports, complete work orders, and maintain preventive maintenance records.
• Initiate purchase requisitions, secure repair parts and materials, and contact vendors or contractors for pricing, availability, and order status.
• Maintain facilities, including cutting grass and weeds, breaking up and removing old concrete, mixing and pouring new concrete, and repairing or replacing doors, windows, and railings.
• Maintain regular job attendance as scheduled by the supervisor.
• Perform other related duties as assigned or required within the scope of this classification.

Requirements

Qualifications may be acquired through the following combination of education and/or experience:

• High school diploma or equivalent (preferred).
• Four years of experience in at least two of the following areas: pumps and motors, hydraulics, or pneumatics.
• Responsible experience in the maintenance of equipment found in wastewater treatment facilities, levees, and pump stations.

Special Qualifications

• Must possess and maintain a valid motor vehicle operator’s license from the time of appointment.
• Must obtain a forklift operator’s permit by the end of the probationary period.
• Candidates must provide proof of U.S. citizenship, permanent residence, or authorization to work without sponsorship.

Skills

• Knowledge of machinery and equipment operations used in wastewater treatment, flood levees, and pump stations.
• Knowledge of purchasing procedures and parts, materials, and supply acquisition.
• Skill in performing installation and maintenance activities on mechanical, pneumatic, and hydraulic equipment.
• Skill in operating assigned tools and equipment.
• Ability to read and interpret technical materials, schematics, and blueprints.
• Ability to prepare reports, complete work orders, and maintain records.
• Ability to understand oral and written instructions.

• Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees and the public.

Pay

Hourly pay range: $28.44 with step increases to $32.37.

Examination Information

The examination will consist of a structured interview assessing job-related knowledge, skills, and abilities. The final eligibility list will be based on candidates achieving a passing score of 60% on the interview (100% weight).

Veteran Points

To claim five points for veteran’s preference, submit proof of service (e.g., DD-214) including date of induction, date of honorable separation, and Social Security number. Additional five points are available for disability with proof of eligibility from the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (dated within the last 12 months). This information must be submitted to the Human Resources Department by August 25, 2026.
