About the Role

Under the supervision and direction of the Director of Maintenance and Operations, the Maintenance Mechanic I performs skilled and semi-skilled work in several trades related to the maintenance and repair of buildings, building systems, fixtures, and equipment.

Distinguishing Characteristics

Positions in this class are assigned a variety of tasks in the building trades. Work requires the use of tools and the ability to perform operations in carpentry, plumbing, electrical, flooring, roofing, and painting. May work with journeyman technicians as an assistant or independently on non-journey level projects. Individuals in this position will also perform cleaning tasks related to assigned maintenance jobs. The ability to work independently on semi-skilled maintenance repairs is essential.

Responsibilities

  • Perform skilled and semi-skilled maintenance and repair work in multiple building trades.
  • Assist journeyman technicians or work independently on non-journey level projects.
  • Conduct cleaning tasks related to assigned maintenance jobs.
  • Follow standard practices, codes, and safety procedures of the major building trades.

Requirements

  • Minimum two years of experience performing general building maintenance work.
  • Equivalent to completion of the twelfth grade.
  • Possession of a valid California driver’s license.

Qualifications

Knowledge of:

  • Standard practices, tools, materials, and processes of the major building trades (emphasis in one or more trades is desirable).
  • Occupational hazards and proper safety procedures.

Physical Abilities:

  • With or without aids, lift up to 50 pounds (arm and floor lift).
  • Sufficient strength, mobility, and range of motion to:
    • Lift non-ambulatory students and adaptive equipment.
    • Physically restrain and control a student up to 200 pounds with assistance.
    • Demonstrate gross motor activities.
    • Climb in and out of vehicles and maneuver students into and out of vehicles, wheelchairs, and toilets.
  • Sufficient vision to read printed material (with or without aids).
  • Sufficient hearing to understand normal and telephone conversations (with or without aids).
  • Ability to speak in an understandable voice with sufficient volume.
  • Manual dexterity to write and use business/office machines.

The usual and customary methods of performing the job’s functions require the following physical demands: occasional lifting, carrying, pushing, pulling, climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, reaching, understanding and following oral and written directions.

Post-Offer Requirements

  • DOJ and FBI criminal background check.
  • TB test within the last 60 days (per Education Code 49406, Assembly Bill 1667).
  • Complete district training on Mandated Reporter, COVID-19, and Sexual Harassment.
  • Pre-employment physical evaluation conducted through the District.
  • Demonstrate sufficient strength, mobility, and range of motion as outlined in physical abilities.
