About the role

This position involves a variety of mechanical and building trade tasks, with some supervisory duties. Skills required in any one trade are generally less than those of a journeyman. Work is performed independently but is frequently inspected upon completion. Employees within the department or division will be given first consideration.

Responsibilities

• Inspects buildings, machinery, and/or equipment to locate repair or maintenance needs.
• Makes building repairs, including cutting and replacing glass, installing doors, patching cement walks/floors/foundations, patching and laying tile, and constructing/installing shelves, partitions, and other wooden parts.
• Repairs wiring, switches, fixtures, and motors.
• Installs, services, and repairs heating plants and various types of small stationary or portable mechanical equipment.
• Water Distribution: Ensures fire hydrant branch valves are identifiable and operational; raises fire hydrants to grade; troubleshoots and rebuilds fire hydrants.
• May supervise helpers or relieve a supervisor of a crew.
• Operates a vehicle to complete work assignments.
• Performs other related duties as assigned.

Requirements

• Thorough knowledge of methods, tools, parts, and materials used in mechanical, building, and/or fire hydrant maintenance and repair.
• Working knowledge of building construction and building equipment operation.
• Knowledge of work hazards and ability to take necessary safety precautions.
• Ability to read and interpret technical repair manuals.
• Ability to use small precision tools for close-tolerance work.
• Physical ability to climb stairs and ladders, bend, twist, and reach as necessary for equipment repair.
• Tolerance for exposure to chemicals, fluids, airborne environmental nuisances (e.g., machine exhaust, open grounds).
• Ability to lift and carry up to 80 pounds; up to 300 pounds with assistance.
• Ability to exert up to 100 pounds of pressure using tools.
• Ability to shovel snow and lift loads up to four feet high.
• Ability to work outdoors in inclement weather conditions.
• Ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships with associates.
• Clear and effective oral and written communication skills.
• Ability to use a computer to access, interpret, and record information.
• May require ability to read and interpret water distribution maps.
• Must acquire and maintain a valid Kansas Class B Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) with an air brake endorsement (or equivalent from home country for Canadian/Mexican citizens).
