About the role

This position assists and works under the direction of the Chief Financial Officer to maintain the physical plant and buildings and grounds, perform advanced-level maintenance repairs and service, and support high-quality customer service to staff and clients regarding all building-related maintenance issues.

Responsibilities

  • Independently performs mechanical skills for all building maintenance and repairs, including carpentry, plumbing, electrical, HVAC, painting, and appliance repair.
  • Acts as team lead when working with lower-level maintenance, custodial personnel, and volunteers.
  • Travels independently to any House of Ruth Maryland operating location to perform assessments and repairs as needed.
  • Oversees and supports grounds maintenance, including lawn cutting and trimming, snow removal, tree pruning, flower and shrub area maintenance, and general trash and debris clean‑up.
  • Maintains, repairs, and utilizes an array of power tools, hand tools, and grounds equipment.
  • Assists in repairs of agency vehicle(s).
  • Utilizes the internet to research parts, maintenance instructions, and information needed to maintain facilities.
  • Provides backup to other operations staff in their absence.
  • Carries a working cell phone or pager to allow for 24‑hour emergency response.
  • Functions as ‘essential staff’ during weather and other emergencies.
  • Assists in donation receiving, procurement, and processing as needed.
  • Utilizes tools and supplies to complete maintenance repairs and tasks.
  • Coordinates with maintenance worker and custodial staff in a lead capacity to complete buildings and grounds repairs and maintenance.
  • Establishes practical procedures to complete maintenance repairs and tasks.
  • Prioritizes job duties and budgets time accordingly.
  • Maintains proper inventory of stock necessary for building maintenance operations.
  • Involves, apprises, and interacts with the Associate Director of Facilities on a job‑by‑job basis regarding building maintenance repairs.
  • Responds to all facility emergencies.
  • Works to keep all buildings and grounds areas maintained, functional, neat, safe, and debris free.
  • Stays up to date on the “Maintenance Request” log to avoid falling behind on maintenance repair issues.
  • Identifies building maintenance‑related problems and deficits to initiate repairs.
  • Reports to the Associate Director of Facilities on current conditions and status of ongoing work.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or G.E.D.
  • Five years’ experience in building maintenance and grounds work.
  • Valid driver’s license.
  • Good written and oral communication skills.
  • Ability to lift 50 pounds and work in all weather conditions.
  • Ability to work off of ladders.
  • Reliable transportation to respond to emergency facility issues and ability to work weekends and holidays if needed.
  • Understanding of intimate partner violence and how it affects the client population.
  • Ability to work with people from diverse backgrounds and maintain client confidentiality.
  • Basic computer skills to access internet/email.
  • Ability to pass a criminal background check.
