Maintenance I

Hourly, non-exempt position in the Maintenance Department reporting to the Maintenance Manager.

About the role

Work independently while using common sense to accomplish tasks efficiently and effectively. The goal is to maintain the greenhouse, warehouses, and other structures in optimal condition, including all associated systems.

Responsibilities

• Build and frame buildings/structures using raw materials or pre-constructed items.
• Form and place concrete; build scaffolding and other construction structures.
• Perform duties using hand and power tools, including framing squares, levels, power saws, drills, nail guns, compressors, precision electrical/electronic testing devices, and generators.
• Install electrical components such as light switches, receptacles, light fixtures, string lights, conduits, and raceways.
• Install foundations, walls, floors, ceilings, and roofs using materials like wood, steel, metal, concrete, plastics, and composites.
• Connect pipe pieces and seal joints using welding equipment, cement, or glue.
• Prepare construction sites by cleaning obstacles and hazards; move materials and equipment as needed.
• Load and unload construction materials.
• Perform all phases of boiler mechanical functions, including troubleshooting, maintenance, repair, and blow-down procedures.
• Manage building systems including heating/cooling, irrigation/fertigation, and electrical.
• Ensure operational efficiency of electrical and mechanical systems through timely inspection and repair.
• Perform general plumbing, welding, fabrication, electrical, and carpentry tasks.
• Assess, diagnose, and evaluate mechanical, electrical, and structural problems; repair or replace components as needed.
• Install heating and irrigation valves, water pumps, and small motors.
• Repair and replace wooden members within and around greenhouses.
• Perform plumbing duties including running pipe in trenches, measuring, cutting, threading, gluing, or welding pipe.
• Weld steam pipes and structures.
• Proactively create and manage daily/weekly maintenance lists; report progress to supervisor with completion dates, materials used, and hours assigned.
• Perform maintenance inspections and repairs on greenhouses, benching, and surrounding areas.
• Read and interpret schematics, equipment manuals, and work orders.
• Maintain documentation of inspections and problems.
• Keep maintenance shops and storage rooms orderly and compliant with safety regulations.
• Maintain accurate inventory of tools, equipment, and supplies.
• Ensure exterior curb appeal and cleanliness of grounds.
• Perform duties in accordance with environmental, food safety, and safety rules and regulations.

Requirements

• 1 year in general construction field.
• Minimum 3-5 years in greenhouse maintenance field.
• High School Diploma or GED required.
• Bilingual in English and Spanish preferred but not required.
• Willingness to work long hours, weekends, and be on call during peak seasons and holidays.
• Experience with mechanical, plumbing, and electrical systems, and industrial fabrication.
• Ability to install, diagnose, repair, wire, and maintain production and building equipment.
• Intermediate welding experience in stick and wire feed welders.
• Proficient with measuring tools like rulers, tapes, squares, and power tools.
• Ability to read, write, and follow complex instructions.
• Capable of performing routine math calculations, including percentages and fractions.
• Detail-oriented with a professional attitude.
• Ability to complete jobs efficiently and safely.
• Strong troubleshooting and problem-solving skills to minimize equipment downtime.
• Demonstrated ability to plan, organize, and execute multiple tasks in a fast-paced environment.
• Ability to maintain accurate work records and detailed repair documentation.
• Ability to meet tight schedules and address urgent situations promptly.
• Ability to drive a tractor, forklift, aerial equipment, and trucks.

Physical Requirements

• Regularly required to sit, talk, or hear; frequently required to stand, walk, use hands to finger, handle, or feel, reach with hands and arms, stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl.
• Must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50+ pounds.
• Close distance and color vision required.
• Able to work both inside and outside in hot and cold environments.
• Possible exposure to dust and pollen.

Pay

The compensation range for this role is determined by factors such as location and required skills. The salary range reflects the lowest to highest amount reasonably anticipated for this position at the time of posting. Compensation is influenced by labor market conditions, relevant education, certifications, experience, skills, geographic location, performance, travel requirements, and business needs.
