About the role
The Maintenance Technician is responsible for the repair and upkeep of equipment and facility, including both planned and predictive maintenance and breakdown repair. This role is a maintenance tech-in-training position with a structured program leading to a rotating shift schedule.
Schedule
- Initial training period: 8-hour day shift (Monday–Friday).
- Upon completion of training: 12-hour fixed schedule on D Team (6 p.m. to 6 a.m.) on a 1-3-3 rotation.
- All trainees will transition to a rotating shift opening; specific shift is to be determined.
Maintenance Tech-In-Training Program Expectations
- Begin training on an 8-hour day shift, working a resource schedule.
- Transition to a 12-hour rotating schedule upon demonstrating required proficiencies.
- Demonstrate progression through on-the-job training tasks with high proficiency.
- Show proper use of hand and power tools, including tool care, applications, inventory control, and replacement/repair.
- Assist Support and Maintenance Technicians in equipment repair to gain training and demonstrate proficiency.
- Maintain above-average safety and housekeeping practices.
- Develop knowledge, troubleshooting skills, and repair techniques for industrial mechanical, electrical/instrumentation, and control systems, including:
- Hydraulic power units, flow control valves, directional control valves, and related components.
- Pneumatic circuitry components (e.g., FRLs, flow control valves, directional and speed control valves, accumulators).
- Mechanical drive transmission systems.
- A/C and D/C power distribution.
- Process control devices (e.g., proximity switches, limit switches, photoelectric sensors, fiber optic, variable speed/frequency drive systems).
- PLC function, address scheme, hardware components, and software (PLC code) process control logic.
- Panel views (HMI).
- Successfully complete all internal and external training programs, including the Avery Dennison Operator to Maintenance Technician Training Program (60 weeks), tracked via NaviTracks in the Convergence System.
Responsibilities
- Locate and diagnose equipment failures; replace defective components and perform basic troubleshooting using standard equipment, drawings, diagrams, sketches, specifications, prints, manuals, and verbal/written instructions.
- Repair and maintain machinery and mechanical equipment, including pneumatic tools, motors, conveyor systems, and production machines, using testing instruments, hand tools, and precision-measuring instruments.
- Install, maintain, and repair equipment for generating, distributing, and utilizing electrical energy; use instruments to test circuits and replace or install new power, light, electronic, and control circuits.
- Troubleshoot electrical malfunctions, inspect circuits and wiring for shielding and grounding, and test electrical equipment for safety and efficiency.
- Repair complex electrical equipment, including motors, switches, switchboards, electrical mechanisms, automated machines, controls, panels, relays, circuit breakers, communication systems, and alarms.
- Perform complex wiring assignments; install, measure, cut, bond, thread, assemble, and install electrical conduit.
- Work from schematics, drawings, or layouts to diagnose and fix electrical system issues; improvise solutions to restore equipment operation promptly.
- Assist engineers in diagnosing problems and suggesting corrective actions.
- Clean and lubricate parts; inspect completed repairs.
- Maintain shop equipment in accordance with OSHA regulations.
- Prepare new machines and production equipment for operation; follow preventive maintenance schedules to minimize downtime.
- Order replacement parts and requisition new equipment.
- Report shift metrics to capture performance and areas for improvement (e.g., breakdown downtime, part availability).
- Maintain maintenance and repair logs.
- Keep the shop and production floor clean, organized, and safe; perform general housekeeping and waste removal.
- Work safely and promote a culture of safety among co-workers.
- Review processes to identify improvements for product/process quality, waste reduction, and efficiency.
- Support team members in meeting department and site goals; participate in team decision-making.
- Assist with project work and special requests; support the production team to meet client needs.
- Maintain facilities, including painting structures, masonry work, plumbing repairs, and woodwork.
- Repair or oversee repairs of HVAC systems; supervise janitorial services and grounds maintenance (e.g., landscaping, lawn care, snow removal).
Requirements
- High school diploma or equivalent required.
- Must have been employed with Avery Dennison for at least 12 months.
- Experience with equipment/process troubleshooting is a plus.
- Trade School Certification (or Associate’s degree) in Industrial Maintenance, or equivalent journeyman’s level training and experience, is a plus.
- Effective written and verbal communication skills.
- Self-motivated with strong computer skills.
