Maintenance / Controls Technician

Duties And Responsibilities

• Process and production equipment troubleshooting.
• Makes significant plant downtime events and initiates problem-solving activities.
• Supports the implementation and improvement of existing preventive/predictive maintenance programs.
• Supports equipment installation coordination/supervision associated with facility needs.
• Procures replacement and upgrade hardware, as needed.
• Performs needed maintenance, repairs, or rebuilds/calibrations of electrical control components and directly supports production operating needs.
• Communicates issues and potential required changes with Controls Engineer.
• Evaluates electrical equipment operation and suggests necessary actions when malfunctions occur or improvements are needed.
• Daily monitors various plant utilities including chiller, air compressor, security system, and fire protection system.
• Completes process and preventive maintenance work orders, capturing and communicating associated data.
• Maintains plant electrical control systems on equipment such as mixers, conveyors, compressors, hydraulics, motors, pneumatics, automated controls, and pumps.
• Troubleshoots electrical control issues, repairs failures of production and facilities equipment.
• Installs and monitors current monitoring systems.
• Maintains and enhances hardware and software knowledge to ensure up-to-date troubleshooting capabilities.
• Installs, maintains, repairs, or replaces control devices such as HMIs, VFDs, PLCs components, etc., as needed.
• Complies and participates in regulatory, Carlisle, and departmental policies, procedures, and standards (PSM, safety protocols, COS).
• Works with mechanical and electrical maintenance technicians to help develop their control skills.
• Executes projects as needed.
• Aids mechanical and electrical technicians with preventive maintenance, breakdowns, and work orders as needed.
• Assists with other duties as assigned.

Required Skills/Abilities/Knowledge

• Knowledge of PLC language (ladder logic, structured text, sequential function charts, etc.).
• Proficient in working with PLCs, HMIs, sensors, level controls, AC/DC drives, VFDs, etc.
• Knowledge of Allen Bradley controls preferred.
• Industrial electrical AC/DC troubleshooting skills.
• Knowledge of CMMS, SAP, MS programs.
• Demonstrated ability to utilize electrical instruments in troubleshooting control systems.
• Awareness of electrical codes such as NEMA.
• Inter-Personal Skills – Encourages open dialogue and collaboration, seeks diverse perspectives to create stronger solutions.
• Effective written and verbal communication.
• Awareness of safe working practices around moving and electrical equipment.
• Critical thinking, troubleshooting, and problem-solving ability.
• Understanding of OSHA and industrial safety protocols.

Education And Experience

• Highschool diploma, higher education preferred.
• Technical school degree, or industrial maintenance certifications (PLC, Machine Logic, etc).
• Technical military specialties considered.
• Experience working as a control technician in an industrial manufacturing environment.

Equipment Used

• Precision measurement equipment (Micrometers, gauges, measurement devices).
• Electrical instrumentation (megohmmeter, multimeter, amperage monitoring systems).
• Hand tools.
• Office equipment (computer, phone, kiosk).
• Computer systems (CMMS, SAP, MS programs).

Working Conditions

• Activities occur inside an insulation manufacturing facility.
• Exposure to temperatures, nuisance dust, use of chemicals, working with mechanical parts, pinch points, noise of industrial machinery.
• Typically 40 hours per week with overtime as required.
• Days/shift vary based on facility needs.
• Fast-paced 24/7 operation.
• Travel requirement: Overnight travel up to 10%, which includes travel to other facilities and trainings.
