Maintenance Assistant

Responsibilities

• Performs semiskilled carpentry activities including repairing doors, windows, window sashes, storm windows, stairs, railings, furniture, locks, and door hardware.
• Operates shop machinery to make and assemble bookcases, shelves, tables, trenches, signs, and modular furniture.
• Erects and moves partitions.
• Builts forms for concrete work.
• Assists in erecting and renovating buildings and structures under supervision.
• Assists in repairing and maintaining locks by making keys, changing lock combinations, opening locks when keys are not available, installing locks, and cleaning and repairing locks.
• Assists in painting and decorating work by performing interior and exterior painting not requiring fine finish or decorative treatment, staining and finishing wood and furniture, painting equipment, and spray-painting surfaces and equipment.
• Performs a variety of semi-skilled maintenance, repair, installation, and construction tasks in one or more of the trades including, carpentry, painting, minor electrical, masonry/tilework, and flooring.
• Performs snow and ice control as needed.

Job Requirements

• Two years of full-time experience in maintenance or mechanical work under the supervision of a skilled trades person.
• Completion of an appropriate two-year technical school course at a school, institute, or branch of the Armed Services, such as the NYS CSEA Partnership (NYS CSEA-P) Applied Skilled Trades Certificate Program*.
• An equivalent combination of experience and training gained by completion of appropriate technical courses at a school, institute, or branch of the Armed Services.

Additional Requirements

• Working knowledge of the methods, materials, tools, and equipment used in trade or trades to which assigned.
• Ability to work under the direction of a field supervisor and follow written and verbal instructions.
• Working knowledge of safety standards and procedures.
• Working knowledge of applicable codes and regulations for the trade or trades to which assigned.
• Ability to read plans, specifications, manuals, and blueprints.
• Ability to perform moderate to heavy manual labor.
• The ability to climb ladders and work at heights on scaffolds and platforms, and in confined spaces.
• Demonstrate the ability to adhere to OSHA safety standards.
