Maintenance Assistant

Duties

• Construction, Maintenance and Rehab work on infrastructure including buildings, recreation facilities, bridges, dams, and access roads
• Trail work
• Fisheries FAS, BLS, FPA, Wildlife, and Land & Forest parking lot maintenance
• Must be competent in the use of carpentry tools and equipment
• Chainsaw and brush saw operation
• Light and heavy equipment operation
• Perform field maintenance on tools and equipment
• Boundary line maintenance
• Follow all safety standards and procedures and complete all training
• Manual lifting of up to 80 pounds
• Work off ladders and scaffolding
• Must have a minimum CDL Class B within 12 months of hire
• Will be subject to the Omnibus Transportation Employee Testing Act of 1991 and will be randomly tested
• Maintain all certifications such as Chainsaw Safety and Operation and CPR/AED and First Aid
• Complete all yearly training required by NYSDEC

Minimum Qualifications

• Two years of full-time experience in maintenance or mechanical work under the supervision of a skilled tradesperson
• Completion of an appropriate two-year technical school course at a school, institute, or branch of the Armed Services, such as the New York State Civil Service Employees Association-Partnership (NYS CSEA-P) Applied Skilled Trades Certificate Program*
• An equivalent combination of experience and training gained by completion of appropriate technical courses at a school, institute, or branch of the Armed Services
• Must obtain a Class B CDL within 12 months of appointment with appropriate endorsements and no airbrake restriction

• Must have a valid driver’s license or demonstrate the ability to meet the transportation needs of the position
• Must be able to negotiate difficult terrain
• Must be able to work in remote areas
• Must be able to work in adverse weather conditions
• Travel may be required
• Overtime may be required
• Overnight travel may be required
• Weekends and holidays may be required
• Must be available for emergency response
• Must be available to respond to after-hours emergencies
• Must obtain a Class B CDL within 12 months of appointment with appropriate endorsements and no air brake restriction
• Will be subject to the Federal Omnibus Transportation Employee Testing Act (OTETA) of 1991, which requires employee testing for drug and alcohol abuse
• Must be able to lift and move objects up to 80 pounds

Employment Information

The annual salary is the hiring rate (beginning of the Salary Range) of the position. Promotion salaries are calculated by the NYS Office of the State Comptroller in accordance with NYS Civil Service Law, OSC Payroll rules and regulations and negotiated union contracts.
