Maintenance Assistant

Duties

  • Construction, Maintenance and Rehab work on infrastructure including buildings, recreation facilities, bridges, dams, and access roads
  • Trail work
  • Fisheries FAS, BLS, FPA, Wildlife, and Land & Forest parking lot maintenance
  • Must be competent in the use of carpentry tools and equipment
  • Chainsaw and brush saw operation
  • Light and heavy equipment operation
  • Perform field maintenance on tools and equipment
  • Boundary line maintenance
  • Follow all safety standards and procedures and complete all trainings
  • Manual lifting of up to 80 pounds
  • Work off ladders and scaffolding

Minimum Qualifications

  • Two years of full-time experience in maintenance or mechanical work under the supervision of a skilled tradesperson
  • Completion of an appropriate two-year technical school course at a school, institute, or branch of the Armed Services, such as the New York State Civil Service Employees Association-Partnership (NYS CSEA-P) Applied Skilled Trades Certificate Program*
  • An equivalent combination of experience and training gained by completion of appropriate technical courses at a school, institute, or branch of the Armed Services
  • Must obtain a Class B CDL within 12 months of appointment with appropriate endorsements and no airbrake restriction

Additional Comments

  • This is a hourly appointment currently funded through 3/31/2027, with a likelihood of continuing beyond that date. Program needs and funding will determine actual termination date.
  • Must have a valid driver’s license or demonstrate the ability to meet the transportation needs of the position.
  • Use of personal protection equipment, including a respirator, will be required.
  • Must be able to negotiate difficult terrain.
  • Must be able to work in remote areas.
  • Must be able to work in adverse weather conditions.
  • Travel may be required.
  • Overtime may be required.
  • Overnight travel may be required.
  • Weekends and holidays may be required.
  • Must be available for emergency response.
  • Must be available to respond to after-hours emergencies.
  • Must obtain a Class B CDL within 12 months of appointment with appropriate endorsements and no air brake restriction.
  • Will be subject to the Federal Omnibus Transportation Employee Testing Act (OTETA) of 1991, which requires employee testing for drug and alcohol abuse.
  • Must be able to lift and move objects up to 80 pounds.
