Maintenance Assistant
About the role
The NYS Department of Environmental Conservation is seeking 2 Full Time Seasonal Maintenance Assistant positions. The shift is from 6 AM to 4:30 PM.
Responsibilities
- Operate heavy equipment such as trucks, tractors, bulldozers, skid steers, backhoes, loaders, excavators, etc.
- Operate light equipment such as power mowers, chain saws, and string trimmers.
- Perform a variety of tasks utilizing power and manual hand tools including but not limited to saws, hammers, drills, sanders, and stationary power tools.
- Possess ability to perform a variety of construction trades including but not limited to masonry, carpentry, painting, roofing, electrical, plumbing & HVAC.
- Perform custodial duties such as cleaning, mopping, vacuuming and trash removal.
- Supervise Green Thumb staff as necessary.
Requirements
- Two years of full-time experience in maintenance or mechanical work under the supervision of a skilled tradesperson.
- Completion of an appropriate two-year technical school course at a school, institute, or branch of the Armed Services, such as the New York State Civil Service Employees Association-Partnership (NYS CSEA-P) Applied Skilled Trades Certificate Program*.
- An equivalent combination of experience and training gained by completion of appropriate technical courses at a school, institute, or branch of the Armed Services.
- Successful completion of the NYS CSEA-P Applied Skilled Trades Certificate Program includes a total of 288 hours of trade-specific classroom instruction, 45 hours of technical math course work, 45 hours of technical communications course work, and 15 hours of blueprint/schematic reading course work.
- Maintain a valid drivers license appropriate for the type of vehicle to be operated.

- Must possess and maintain a valid drivers license.
Skills
Must be able to negotiate difficult terrain. Must be able to work in remote areas. Must be able to work in adverse weather conditions. Travel may be required. Overtime may be required. Overnight travel may be required. Weekends and holidays may be required. Must be available for emergency response. Must be available to respond to after-hours emergencies. Must be able to lift and move objects up to 80 pounds.

Schedule
Seasonal, hourly appointment with an anticipated end date of 11/25/2026. Program needs and funding will determine actual termination date. Actual work schedule, duties and travel requirements may vary and will be discussed at the interview.
