About the role

The Maintenance Assistant position is available in the Public Works Department of the City of Baldwin Park. The position is part-time, non-benefited, and "at-will," with an average work schedule of approximately 20 hours per week. Working conditions include flexible hours between 6:30 a.m. and 5:00 p.m., Monday through Friday, as well as mornings, afternoons, holidays, and weekends. Total hours worked shall not exceed 960 hours per fiscal year.

Responsibilities

  • Assist in repaving, patching, overlaying, pothole and crack sealing repair of asphalt.
  • Remove damaged improvements and set concrete forms.
  • Repair curbs, gutters, and sidewalks.
  • Responsible for the upkeep of bus shelters.
  • Pressure wash as needed.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.
  • Assist in landscape turf mowing and edging, weed abatement, hedge and shrub trimming, and tree planting.
  • Litter control pick-up at various park sites throughout the City.
  • Perform daily litter and debris control.
  • Clean and maintain City facilities and park shelters.
  • Perform janitorial services as required.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • A Class C Driver's License and the ability to maintain a satisfactory driving record.
  • Prior experience not required; however, incumbent will be required to operate light landscape maintenance equipment and must have knowledge of proper use and maintenance of equipment.

Qualifications

  • Knowledge of safety rules and practices pertaining to landscape maintenance.
  • Knowledge of proper use, maintenance, and repair methods and techniques of equipment and tools.
  • Ability to read, write, and carry out oral and written directions utilizing the English language.
  • Excellent customer service skills.
  • Ability to effectively interact with City staff, volunteers, and the public.

Special Requirements

  • The ability to frequently bend, twist, walk on irregular surfaces, and lift up to 50 pounds on a continuous basis.
  • Exposure to cold, heat, noise, outdoors, vibration, mechanical and electrical equipment.
  • The ability to kneel, crouch, stoop, squat, crawl, climb, and travel to different sites and locations.

Benefits and Compensation

  • This is a non-benefited, at-will part-time position; employee shall not work in excess of 960 total hours per fiscal year.
  • Hourly compensation will depend on qualifications, prior experience, and skills.
  • Employment with the City may be discontinued at any time without cause, notice, or right of appeal or hearing.
  • Paid sick leave: 40 hours of paid sick leave in a 12-month period.
