Serve Those Who Have Served—join the team at the State Veterans Cemetery in Middletown, CT. This hands-on role supports the mission of honoring Connecticut’s veterans with dignity and respect.
About the role
The State Veterans Cemetery in Middletown is Connecticut’s largest state-operated veterans cemetery, averaging 17–23 burials per week (up to 28). Burial is reserved for eligible veterans and their spouses.
Schedule
- Monday–Friday, first shift: 7:00 a.m.–3:00 p.m.
- Full-time, 37.5 hours per week
Responsibilities
- Meet and greet visitors and funeral directors; set up and break down for special events; assist with traffic control.
- Assist with funerals by:
- digging cremation graves
- opening, interring, and closing columbarium niches
- closing graves
- removing and resetting federal markers
- installing and removing ground protection devices
- Maintain the grounds through:
- mowing, string trimming, fertilizing, and weed control
- growing plants and maintaining trees
- snow removal
- maintenance of buildings and cleaning restrooms
- Operate various equipment and vehicles, including:
- dump trucks of less than 5 tons
- complex mowers, tractors, and skid steers
Requirements
- Any experience and training that provide the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.
- Ability to:
- follow oral and written instructions
- operate equipment and vehicles used in daily work
- learn policies and procedures
- perform minor maintenance on tools and equipment
- keep records
- Adequate physical strength, stamina, agility, and visual/auditory acuity to perform the duties.
- May be required to possess and retain appropriate current licenses, permits, and/or certifications.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience working in a cemetery setting.
- Groundskeeping experience.
- Snowplow and snowblower operation.
- Operation and maintenance of skid steer loaders and zero-turn lawn mowers.
- Operation of excavators and use of associated attachments.
- Experience setting federal grave markers.
Working Conditions
- Lift moderate to heavy weights.
- Exposure to extreme weather conditions and risk of injury from equipment.
- May require use of protective equipment such as respirators and safety goggles.
- May require completion of an asbestos removal program consistent with EPA guidelines.
