Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) Technologist II

Under the direction of the Radiologist, Director, and Manager, performs diagnostic medical imaging by magnetic resonance including Cardiac MRI, Interventional MRI, or invasive procedures.

Responsibilities

  • Performs magnetic resonance imaging examinations (40% of time):
    • Assesses situations, considers alternatives, and chooses appropriate courses of action.
    • Provides MR safety screening for 100% of patients, visitors, and staff prior to entering MR rooms.
    • Responds to workload changes efficiently.
    • Conducts duties in accordance with departmental standards.
    • Communicates technical information clearly to patients, families, and visitors.
    • Produces consistent, high-quality images.
    • Serves as a resource to co-workers.
    • Assesses vein/site selection and initiates venipuncture per established standards; documents in RIS.
    • Demonstrates knowledge of cross-sectional anatomy, recognizes abnormalities, and alerts radiologists as needed.
    • Relates to coworkers professionally and respectfully to promote a culture of safety.
    • Maintains proficiency in the Electronic Medical Record (EMR).
  • Observes departmental policies, objectives, quality assurance, safety, environmental, and infection control standards (2% of time):
    • Runs quality control procedures, evaluates results, and makes corrections.
    • Notifies supervisor of quality issues.
    • Demonstrates cooperation and professionalism across hospital areas.
    • Reports problems affecting patient exam outcomes.
  • Prepares written documentation as required by the profession and department (3% of time):
    • Provides accurate documentation per professional and departmental standards.
    • Uses the Kronos time clock system accurately.
  • Uses Hospital/Radiology systems according to established policy (3% of time):
    • Inputs and retrieves information from HIS/Radiology systems correctly.
    • Recognizes and reports computer malfunctions.
    • Trains staff as necessary and maintains patient confidentiality.
    • Performs 3D workstation duties as prescribed by examination.
  • Follows hospital and radiology safety and infection control policies (2% of time):
    • Maintains a clean and orderly work area.
    • Adheres to safety and infection control policies.
    • Disposes of bio-hazardous waste properly.
    • Uses protective equipment as needed.
    • Follows dress code and wears ID badge at all times.
    • Respects patient confidentiality and uses discretion in discussions.
  • Practices safety and infection control (5% of time):
    • Follows universal precautions and hazardous waste disposal guidelines.
    • Maintains a safe, clean, and therapeutic environment.
    • Reports risk management concerns.
    • Completes annual mandatory training (e.g., safety, fire, bloodborne pathogens, TB, hazardous communication, age-appropriate care).
    • Works alertly and safely at all times.
  • Provides service excellence (5% of time):
    • Delivers timely, high-quality, courteous, and respectful care.
    • Recognizes and considers diverse needs (culture, religion, disability).
    • Demonstrates teamwork with other departments and coworkers.
    • Provides emotional support and alleviates fear/anxiety.
    • Dresses professionally and answers questions knowledgeably.

  • Incorporates Quality Improvement (QI) into daily work (5% of time):
    • Uses resources responsibly and reports equipment problems.
    • Recommends efficiency improvements and minimizes waste.
    • Reviews departmental PI, OA, and QC monthly.
    • Provides data for Performance Improvement initiatives.
  • Provides age-appropriate care (varies by patient population):
    • Demonstrates knowledge of growth and development for infants, children, adolescents, adults, and geriatrics.
    • Assesses and interprets age-specific data to identify patient needs.
    • Uses age-appropriate communication skills.
    • Involves family/significant others in decision-making.
    • Provides services tailored to the age groups served.
    • Assesses population-specific needs (e.g., language).
  • Provides specialized care for high-risk patients (<1% of time):
    • Restraint Care:
      • Evaluates alternatives to restraints before application.
      • Applies restraints per approved procedures.
      • Monitors and assesses patient response during restraint periods.
      • Provides timely patient care (toileting, skin care, hydration, feeding).
      • Releases restraints as soon as possible.
    • Pain Management:
      • Assesses pain on admission and during reassessments.
      • Incorporates cultural/spiritual beliefs into pain management plans.
      • Implements pain management techniques, focusing on prevention.
      • Includes patients/families in developing pain management plans.
      • Considers alternative pain control methods (e.g., massage, repositioning, music therapy).
    • Abuse Assessment:
      • Recognizes signs of abuse/neglect and reports to physician and Risk Management.
      • Recommends consultations (e.g., psychiatric, social work) for evaluation.
  • Uses communication effectively (5% of time):
    • Communicates clearly and succinctly with staff, patients, and medical personnel.
    • Displays initiative and enthusiasm for non-routine duties.
    • Serves as a resource person for the department.
    • Explains procedures to patients/families in understandable terms.
  • Participates in continuing education (2% of time):
    • Attends orientations and accumulates continuing education hours per ARRT guidelines.
    • Provides in-services as necessary.
    • Documents current ARRT status.
  • Attends meetings and participates in committees as directed (1% of time):
    • Attends required meetings and participates in committees.
    • Documents attendance at outside meetings.
  • Explains procedures and provides information to customers (2% of time):
    • Explains treatments/procedures, including purpose, preparation, expectations, and duration.
    • Uses lay terms and avoids technical jargon.
    • Invites questions and secures patient permission before proceeding.
  • Presents self professionally (2% of time):
    • Wears ID badge above the waist with picture visible.
    • Follows dress code.
    • Limits conversations in customer presence to work-related topics.
    • Avoids discussing internal issues, personal problems, or conflicts in public.
    • Supports the organization, colleagues, and physicians publicly.
    • Avoids offensive jokes, language, or materials.
  • Maintains an environment conducive to good customer relations (5% of time):
    • Keeps work areas clean, orderly, and free of clutter/trash.
    • Removes soiled linens from patient areas immediately.
    • Reports maintenance needs or safety concerns promptly.
    • Follows paging policies and controls noise levels.
    • Respects and meets cultural differences.
    • Assists lost or confused customers.
  • Respects customer privacy and confidentiality (5% of time):
    • Keeps curtains/doors closed during procedures.
    • Knocks before entering or asks permission to enter curtained areas.
    • Ensures patients are covered appropriately during transport or procedures.
    • Conducts private interviews (e.g., financial, personal) discreetly.
    • Keeps medical/financial information confidential and avoids public discussions.
    • Accesses only necessary patient charts.
    • Asks patients if they want family/guests to leave during procedures.
  • Improves the waiting experience (5% of time):
    • Greets customers and informs them of estimated wait times; offers alternatives for long waits.
    • Explains reasons for waits and next steps in the process.
    • Offers comfort measures (e.g., beverages, blankets, magazines).
    • Keeps waiting customers informed of their status at frequent intervals.
    • Maintains clean and comfortable waiting areas.
    • Apologizes for long waits or delays.

Requirements

  • Current ARRT certification in Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MR).
  • Current CPR certification.
  • Ability to perform venipuncture per established standards.
  • Proficiency in Electronic Medical Record (EMR) systems.
  • Knowledge of cross-sectional anatomy and MR anatomical landmarks.
  • Strong communication skills for technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Commitment to safety, infection control, and quality assurance standards.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with multidisciplinary teams.
  • Demonstrated professionalism and adherence to dress code/ID badge policies.
