The General Atomics Inertial Fusion Technology (IFT) division designs, manufactures, and characterizes first-of-a-kind precision components in support of national labs, fusion, and science technologies. Components are manufactured and measured on highly-specialized and precise equipment, often at millimeter scale with micron-sized features and tolerances.

About the role

Under general supervision with detailed instructions on new activities and intermittent review of work, this position is responsible for operating and performing fabrication of machine parts using light-duty bench or floor-type machine tools such as small lathes, power mills, extruding machines, drill or punch presses, power brakes, or shears.

Responsibilities

• Operates precision CNC lathes or mills along with standard machining equipment such as manual drill presses, lathes, mills, saws, and shears.
• Cleans machines and work area.
• Deburrs parts.
• Performs kitting of production tools, fixtures, cutters, and pre-cut raw material.
• Establishes tool positions, centerlines, and tool heights within precision machining equipment.
• After complete instruction, operates machines and inspects parts utilizing blueprint dimensions and prescribed metrology equipment.
• Records data in accordance with established protocols and standards.
• Monitors and verifies quality in accordance with statistical process or other control procedures.
• Prepares and saw cuts raw materials.
• May layout, fabricate, and assemble components.
• Performs other duties as assigned or required.

Requirements

• Typically requires an associate's degree, technical/trade school training, or equivalent, and four or more years of related experience. Additional experience may be substituted for formal education.
• Must be customer-focused and possess the ability to perform semi-routine set-up and fabrication of machined parts.
• Good knowledge of machining equipment, including the ability to use judgment and safe practices.
• Ability to read and understand engineering blueprints and diagrams.
• Skills to maintain the flow of work within the unit.
• Good interpersonal and written communication skills to interface with employees and supervisors.
• Basic computer skills.
• Must be comfortable handling fragile, millimeter-scale components for both fabrication and inspection activities.
• Must be able to work both independently and in a team environment.
• Flexibility to work extended hours as required.
• Ability to obtain and maintain a DOE Q clearance.

Pay

Hourly salary range: $56,180 – $83,518
