About the role

The primary purpose of this position is to machine and fabricate tooling, parts, assemblies, guarding, and jigs/fixtures for production equipment for sustainable solutions. Job tasks include making new, modifying, and repairing manufacturing components. Components made support all internal groups: Engineering, Operations, Maintenance, Quality, and Facilities. Takes an active role in component failure investigation, problem solving, and creating sustainable solutions.

Responsibilities

  • Sets up and operates machine tools such as manual machining equipment (lathes, mills), manual surface grinder, heat treat oven, welder, sheet metal shear and brake to machine or fabricate parts, using hand tools as needed to fit and assemble parts.
  • Machines, alters, and repairs components to needed specifications from blueprints, old/worn/broken parts, models, hand sketches, or verbal description. Occasionally advises design improvements, either geometric or material, to achieve the desired benefit.
  • Determines machining sequence of operation to complete the job task in a timely manner and meet tolerance requirements with the available equipment and tools. Job tasks are to be completed with minimal supervision.
  • Computes dimension measurements using hand calculations, calculator, or programs such as CAD (DraftSight, SolidWorks), using plan layouts to determine assembly methods and sequence of operations. Must be able to compute simple math and geometry/trigonometry formulas.
  • Able to machine and fabricate using FDA-compliant materials like stainless steel, aluminum, and acetal.
  • Utilizes material on hand or requests material to be ordered for the project; lays out the component with standard practices including measuring, marking, and scribing materials for machining.
  • Verifies dimensions, clearances, and alignment using measuring devices such as dial indicators, gauge blocks, thickness gages, and micrometers to ensure desired precision fit for equipment, assemblies, or components.
  • Works with setup and manufacturing engineers or technicians to troubleshoot component root cause failure, outline a sustainable repair/replacement path, and make critical repairs to release the equipment back to an operating state.
  • Performs predictive/preventive maintenance and assists with updating the predictive and preventative maintenance program.
  • Assists project completion with component modifications or custom guarding for new equipment installations to meet equipment validation requirements and timeline.
  • Documents, by methods of hand sketches (using standard views) or redlining the prints, the “as-built” state of the component and provides Engineering if modifications were required.
  • Documents, organizes, and labels new tooling, jigs, and fixtures.
  • Documents daily work logs and tracks time using Maximo software.
  • Maintains shop cleanliness in daily and weekly cleanups.
  • Requests material or tooling when needed to maintain stock inventory of the machine shop.
  • Supports team collaboration and cross training of peers on systems responsible to maintain, ensuring redundancy (operation/minor troubleshooting) in the Machine Shop Group.
