Job Purpose

Machinist II is responsible for setting up, programming, operating, and maintaining CNC and manual machining equipment to manufacture and repair components for road paving equipment. This role requires the ability to work independently, revise programs, maintain tolerances, and produce high-quality parts in a low-volume, high-mix manufacturing environment.

Essential Functions

  • Set up and operate CNC and manual machine tools to manufacture production and one-off components.
  • Create and modify machining programs for new and existing parts (G-code and conversational programming).
  • Revise existing programs to accommodate engineering changes and part revisions.
  • Calculate appropriate feeds, speeds, tooling selections, and cutting parameters based on material and machining requirements.
  • Read and interpret blueprints, engineering drawings, and work instructions.
  • Maintain tolerances as precise as +.001%.
  • Perform in-process and final inspections using precision measuring equipment (calipers, micrometers, bore gauges, indicators, etc.).
  • Troubleshoot machine issues and make process adjustments to improve quality and efficiency.
  • Safely operate forklifts and overhead cranes to move materials and finished components.
  • Maintain a clean and organized work area.
  • Work closely with engineering, fabrication, and production personnel to support manufacturing operations.
  • Follow all company safety policies and quality standards.
  • Carry out other duties and responsibilities as assigned to meet business and operational needs.

Qualifications and Requirements

  • 1-3 years machine shop experience with CNC machines or equivalent technical training/certification generally required.
  • A high school diploma or equivalent.
  • Ability to read and interpret documents such as job orders, procedure manuals, and schematics (blueprints).
  • Strong attention to detail and organizational skills.
  • Ability to maintain good attendance.
  • Excellent verbal communication skills, with the ability to clearly communicate detailed information to co-workers, management, vendors, suppliers, and customers.
  • Excellent customer service skills with the ability to interact in a positive and professional manner to develop and maintain strong working relationships with co-workers, management, suppliers, and customers.
  • Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.
  • Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form.
  • Skill in the fabrication, joining, and repair of a variety of metal objects, equipment, fixtures, and structures.
  • Ability to use department equipment such as forklift, ladder/scaffold, overhead crane, and power tools.

Physical Demands and Work Environment

  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is occasionally required to talk and hear.
  • The employee is frequently required to stand, bend, kneel, climb stairs, and walk; use hands to finger, handle, or feel; and reach with hands and arms.
  • The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 40 pounds; frequently lift and/or move up to 100 pounds.
  • If lifting over 50 pounds, employees should utilize a jib, overhead crane, or ask for assistance from other team members.
  • Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.
  • The work environment is usually an indoor setting with frequent exposure to outside elements.
  • This position requires infrequent travel, which may involve exposure to extreme weather elements.
