About the role
The Machinist operates machine tools to produce precision metal parts. This role is part of the Kollmorgen team in Radford, VA and works on a weekend shift schedule.
Responsibilities
- Program CNC lathe and CNC milling machine to perform various machining operations.
- Chase threads to different class fits, inside or outside diameters, and turn tapers to specified angles.
- Perform all setups on machines using special fixtures and improvised methods to hold and align workpieces.
- Study sample parts, blueprints, drawings, and engineering information to determine machining methods and sequences.
- Select, recommend, and advise on the type of tooling needed for machining operations.
- Check feeds and speeds necessary to machine parts, ensuring adherence to close tolerance and dimensional requirements.
- Perform first-piece inspections and sharpen or replace ordinary tooling as needed.
- Report any defective material or unusual conditions to the coordinator.
- Coordinate with other machinists and supervisors, communicate with buyers/planners for material needed, and lubricate and clean equipment.
- Keep work area orderly and adhere to prescribed safety rules.
- Design fixtures, tooling, or experimental parts to meet special engineering needs.
- Dispose of scrap or waste material in accordance with company policies and environmental regulations.
- Evaluate experimental procedures and recommend changes or modifications for improved efficiency and adaptability.
Requirements
- Associates degree in Machine Technology or equivalent certification/experience.
- Knowledge of machines and tools, including their designs, uses, repair, and maintenance.
- Knowledge of arithmetic, algebra, geometry, statistics, and their applications.
- Knowledge of design techniques, tools, and principals involved in production of precision technical plans, blueprints, drawings, and models.
- Good written and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to maintain very close tolerances (.0003 or better).
- Self-motivated and capable of completing tasks without supervision and within time limits.
Qualifications
- Minimum of three years of progressively difficult machinist experience.
- Experience operating and setting up CNC multi-axis lathe/mill machines.
- Experience operating CNC lathes and CNC milling machines.

Pay
Compensation is commensurate with experience.
Schedule
This is a weekend shift role, working Friday, Saturday, and Sunday on 12-hour shifts.
