About the Role

The Licensed Vocational Nurse delivers quality general and psychiatric nursing care to patients hospitalized for treatment of psychiatric or emotional disorders, supports the hospital and program philosophy of care, and ensures the safety and well-being of each patient.

Responsibilities

• Monitor the health and well-being of medical and/or non-medical tasks for Child, Adolescent, and Adult patients during a given shift.
• Guide non-professional personnel in observing individuals for changes in conditions or behavior and report these changes to the charge nurse (RN).
• Provide prescribed medical treatment to individuals.
• Demonstrate basic knowledge of treatment procedures and interventions common to acute psychotic and non-violent crises intervention.
• Apply knowledge of abnormal psychology as typically found in child or adolescent psychiatric populations, and extend this knowledge to adult care.
• Understand medical terminology, especially terms associated with child, adolescent, or adult psychiatric care.
• Familiarity with psychopharmacy and the use of psychotropic medications in child, adolescent, or adult psychiatric populations.
• Perform other related duties as assigned by professional staff.

Requirements

• Must possess current LVN licensure in the State of Texas by the Nursing Board.
• Must possess or obtain a valid CPR certification and SAMA training within 30 days of hire.
• Prior psychiatric healthcare experience is helpful but not required.

• Maintain self-control in volatile or hostile customer service interactions.
• High school level reading and writing skills; acceptable oral and written communication skills with legible handwriting.
• Customer service skills for courteous interactions with patients, the public, and staff.
• Use of appropriate social skills, including demonstration of respect for patients and staff; empathy toward patients.
• Ability to work independently in a physically restricted environment for extended periods.
• Skill to independently interpret reference materials to comply with laws, rules, regulations, policies, and procedures.
• Ability to apply time management practices to prioritize, schedule, and complete work effectively.
• Ability to work on multiple tasks or parts of tasks simultaneously to ensure timely completion.

Physical Requirements and Environmental Conditions

• Perform duties with or without reasonable accommodations, including stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, and grasping.
• Ability to perceive attributes of objects such as size, shape, temperature, and/or texture by touch.
• Ability to express and exchange ideas via spoken word, including conveying detailed or important instructions accurately, sometimes quickly and loudly.
• Hearing to perceive sound with no less than 40 db loss at 500 Hz, 1000 Hz, and 2000 Hz, with or without correction.
• Perform repetitive motions with wrists, hands, and fingers.
• Exert up to 100 pounds of force occasionally; lift, carry, push, pull, or move objects.
• Light work most of the time, exerting up to 20 pounds of force occasionally and/or up to 10 pounds frequently; occasionally medium work, exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally and/or up to 20 pounds frequently.
• Minimum standard of visual acuity with or without correction to complete administrative, clerical, and analytical tasks.
• Ability to work and concentrate amidst distractions such as noise, conversation, and foot traffic; handle interruptions and transition between tasks.
• Work is predominantly indoors; worker may be subjected to temperature changes but is generally not substantially exposed to adverse environmental conditions.
