LPN - Geriatric - Senior Progressive Care Unit

About the Role

Trinity Health Grand Rapids Hospital, 3 Lacks is a 32 all-private-bed acute care unit serving patients aged 65 and older. This high-acuity adaptable unit regularly cares for patients on telemetry, cardiac drips, high-flow oxygen, bi-pap, and similar treatments. Under the general direction of the Registered Nurse, the Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) provides direct patient care to all ages and assists the RN in coordinating care for a specific group of patients. The LPN has full access to medications, including handling, preparing, and administering them within the LPN scope of practice and job description.

Requirements

• High school diploma or equivalent and graduation from an accredited LPN program
• Current Practical Nurse license in the State of Michigan
• CPR or BLS Certified

Schedule

• Full-Time
• Three 12-hour shifts per week
• 7:00 PM - 7:30 AM (Night Shift)

Responsibilities

• Under the direction of the RN, assists with the initial and ongoing assessment of assigned patients through observation and data collection, as delegated by the RN.
• Performs activities delegated by the RN and/or Physician, including but not limited to:
  • Venipuncture for specimens, including blood cultures
  • Initiates and discontinues intravenous (peripheral short catheters)
  • Inserts and discontinues indwelling and intermittent clean urinary catheterization
  • Obtains laboratory specimens and performs basic laboratory procedures (e.g., point-of-care blood glucose, stool sampling, sputum collection)
  • Performs basic bedside care and selected procedures under RN supervision:
    • 12-lead ECG
    • Dressing changes
    • Routine respiratory care (e.g., coughing and deep breathing, incentive spirometry, pulse oximetry, oxygen setup and administration, handheld nebulizer)
    • Vital signs
    • Recognition, reporting, and intervention for life-threatening conditions
  • Administers physician-directed treatments (e.g., eye irrigation)
  • Performs other unit-specific activities, such as assisting with activities of daily living appropriate to the patient's condition
