Responsibilities
- Confer with the Medical Director and attending physician regarding assigned residents.
- Consult with physicians concerning resident evaluations and assist in planning nursing services.
- Initiate requests for consultation or referral and respond to requests from residents, physicians, or nursing staff.
- Examine residents and their records to identify abnormal findings and recognize early signs of physical, emotional, or mental problems.
- Determine when to refer residents to a physician for evaluation, supervision, or directions.
- Perform administrative duties such as completing medical forms, reports, evaluations, and charting.
- Implement and maintain established policies, procedures, and objectives related to quality assurance, safety, and infection control.
- Interpret policies to physicians, residents, family members, and the public as appropriate.
- Provide written and oral reports to the attending physician, Medical Director, or Administrator regarding resident status and care.
- Participate in planning and evaluating nursing service policies and procedures.
- Participate in facility surveys conducted by authorized government agencies.
- Resolve complaints and grievances from nursing department personnel.
- Ensure fair administration of employment actions in compliance with anti-discrimination policies.
- Supervise and assist in managing the infection control program, including ensuring proper use of personal protective equipment.
- Assist in developing preliminary and comprehensive assessments of resident nursing needs.
- Observe medication passes and treatments to ensure quality.
- Administer services within the scope of nursing practice, such as catheterization, tube feedings, suction, wound care, medication administration, and more.
- Prepare and administer medications as ordered by the physician and review medication cards for accuracy.
- Chart nurses’ notes, accident/incident reports, changes in resident condition, and communications with physicians in a professional and timely manner.
- Perform routine charting duties in accordance with established policies and regulations.
- Maintain adequate stock levels of medications, medical supplies, and equipment.
- Assist the Quality Assessment and Assurance Committee in developing and implementing corrective action plans.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Requirements
- High School Diploma or equivalent.
- Graduate of an accredited Licensed Vocational or Practical Nurse program.
- Active license to practice as a Licensed Vocational Nurse (LVN) or Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) in the state.
- Evidence of being free of tuberculosis infection upon hire and as required by facility policies.
- Ability to read, write, speak, and understand English.
- Ability to make independent decisions when circumstances warrant.
- Tactful and professional demeanor when dealing with personnel, residents, family members, visitors, and government agencies.
- Knowledge of nursing and medical practices, procedures, and regulations pertaining to long-term care.
- Leadership and supervisory ability with a willingness to work harmoniously with others.
- Patience, tact, enthusiasm, and a willingness to handle difficult residents.
Work Environment
- Works throughout the nursing service area, including nurse’s stations and resident rooms.
- Subject to frequent interruptions and interactions with residents, personnel, visitors, and government agencies.
- May be exposed to hostile or emotionally upset residents, family members, or visitors.
- Works beyond normal hours, including weekends, holidays, and may be on call 24/7.
- Subject to call-back during emergencies such as severe weather or evacuations.
- Exposed to potential hazards such as falls, burns, infectious waste, diseases (including TB, AIDS, and Hepatitis B), and hazardous chemicals.
- May handle and be exposed to odors, disinfectants, tobacco smoke, and other air contaminants.
Physical and Sensory Requirements
- Ability to move intermittently throughout the workday.
- Ability to cope with mental and emotional stress associated with the position.
- Must possess adequate sight and hearing (with or without prosthetics) to perform job requirements.
- Must function independently, demonstrate flexibility, personal integrity, and the ability to work effectively.
- Must meet general health requirements, which may include a medical and physical examination.
- Ability to work with ill, disabled, elderly, or emotionally upset individuals.
- Ability to lift up to 25 pounds regularly and up to 50 pounds infrequently.
- Occasional pushing and pulling of carts.
- May assist in evacuating residents during emergencies.
