About the role
The substitute teacher monitors students and their learning in the absence of the regularly scheduled teacher, maintaining a positive learning environment while facilitating lesson plans. A successful candidate will follow direction, hold students accountable, and demonstrate enthusiasm for education and learning.
The long-term substitute steps in when a regular teacher is out for several weeks or months (e.g., maternity leave or medical recovery). This role acts as the full teacher of record to keep student learning on track.
Responsibilities
- Create or follow long-term pacing guides and daily lesson plans that align with school rules.
- Teach lessons in required subjects and support all students in their learning.
- Set and enforce behavior rules to maintain a safe, happy classroom environment.
- Administer tests and quizzes, grade work, and record student progress.
- Communicate with parents, update staff, and attend school meetings.
Requirements
- Valid teaching license or substitute teaching permit required by the state or district.
- Bachelor’s degree preferred or required, depending on grade level and subject.
Skills
- Strong knowledge of the subject matter.
- Patience and effective classroom management skills.
Pay
- Long-term Substitute: $165.00 per day.
- Long-term Substitute with PEL: $175.00 per day.
An employee’s pay within the salary range will be based on factors including education, qualifications, experience, skills, geographic location, and organizational needs.
