Long Term Substitute Teacher

This role is a temporary replacement for a vacant teacher position for up to 90 days. You will manage student learning and behavior in alignment with the goals and directives of enCircle’s Minnick Schools, which serve students ages 5–22 who need extra support to succeed in the classroom. Locations include Roanoke, Harrisonburg, Wytheville, Wise, and Bristol.

A clean driving record is required, as the role involves driving.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s Degree preferred
• Eligible for a Virginia teaching license to teach the subject/grade of the long-term assignment preferred
• General knowledge of student instruction and management practices, procedures, and techniques
• Knowledge of Minnick School rules and procedures
• Ability to guide, direct, teach, and control students; follow written and oral instructions; and establish effective working relationships with staff and students
• Ability to maintain effective classroom management strategies
• Ability to acquire First Aid and CPR Certification
• Ability to complete all mandated trainings prior to working in the classroom, including de-escalation and physical management of students (Safety Care)
• Ability to learn proprietary software
• Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with staff, students, parents, and administration
• Ability to work effectively with people from diverse backgrounds
• Valid Virginia Driver’s License, satisfactory driving record, and proof of insurance if an assigned driver
• Good oral, written, interpersonal, and communication skills
• Ability to organize work effectively and maintain records, prepare reports, and complete required paperwork according to licensing and agency requirements on a timely basis
• Basic computer skills and experience working with Microsoft Office
• Ability to observe health and safety regulations
• Ability to promote a positive and supportive classroom environment
• Ability to absorb, analyze, organize, and project information and ideas

Driving Requirements

The following violations will disqualify candidates:

• Within the last 5 years: reckless driving (including speeding 20+ mph over the limit), DUI/refusal of blood/breath test, manslaughter or negligent homicide, driving as a habitual offender, driving on a suspended/revoked license, commercial motor vehicle violations (disqualified, under the influence, BAC ≥ .04, refusal of test, out-of-service order violation), injuring a person while racing (felony), failure to stop at a crash with injury/death/property damage ≥ $1,000, emergency vehicle violation resulting in death, vehicular assault, willful stopping/impeding/damaging a vehicle, blocking access to a service facility, attempting to elude police, operating an unsafe vehicle, vulnerable road user death
• Within the last 3 years: passing a stopped school bus, careless driving, three or more minor moving violations

Responsibilities

• Maintains and respects confidentiality of student and school personnel information
• Maintains discipline and classroom control that fosters a safe and positive environment for all students and staff in accordance with school and agency policies
• Ensures adequate supervision to assure health, welfare, and safety of all students
• Prepares for assigned classes and shows evidence of preparation upon request
• Encourages students to set and maintain high standards of classroom behavior
• Provides an effective program of instruction, including instructional skills and knowledge of child growth and development
• Uses materials and resources in accordance with the adopted curriculum and physical limitations of the location
• Takes necessary precautions to protect students, equipment, materials, and facilities
• Reports all student injuries, accidents, and illnesses to administration immediately or as soon as reasonably possible
• Implements lesson plans while ensuring academic time integrity and motivating students to learn and participate
• Organizes students for effective instruction
• Maintains students’ coursework, data, and documentation in accordance with school and agency policies
• During critical personnel shortages or emergencies, temporarily performs any duties as directed
• Performs other duties as assigned
