HCPA is a Title I Charter School that serves students through a school-wide plan for instruction focused on the needs of at-risk students. The Long-Term In-House Substitute Teacher for Middle School Health Teacher is responsible for instructing students in grades 6-8. This role creates a flexible classroom environment favorable to learning and personal growth, instructs students in core subjects, and develops a comprehensive instructional program. The substitute will motivate students to develop skills, attitudes, and knowledge for a solid educational foundation.

This long-term substitute position supports a staff absence from August 17 to January 29.

Responsibilities

  • Adhere to the curriculum and lesson plans assigned by the school and/or classroom teacher; assume responsibility for lesson planning, grading, and record keeping during the long-term absence.
  • Provide instruction in core curriculum areas; make appropriate use of instructional resources and technologies.
  • Support Minnesota Graduation and Common Core Standards; implement the goals and objectives of the District and school.
  • Evaluate student performance using school and District systems; promote student achievement; maintain required student records and reports.
  • Perform classroom management duties; enforce rules governing student conduct; take appropriate disciplinary action when necessary.
  • Provide differentiated instructional methods and content to ensure student mastery; use data such as screening, diagnostic information, and progress monitoring to adjust instruction.
  • Promote a welcoming, respectful, and academically challenging learning environment; foster a social environment that builds trust, respect, and self-discovery.
  • Maintain accurate records including attendance, grades, assessments, and lesson plans via Schoology and/or PowerSchool.
  • Ensure all online class resources are current via Schoology/Seesaw; connect with families via phone calls, emails, conferences, and school events.
  • Participate in professional development meetings; implement new learning in the classroom following professional development.
  • Develop and work on new learning based on self-assessment, input from teacher leaders, and the director of teaching and learning.
  • Utilize student achievement data to address strengths and weaknesses and guide instructional decisions.
  • Continuously seek opportunities for professional growth.
  • When not required as a substitute teacher, work on student projects or activities as described by K-12 school directors.
  • Supervise student activities, including bus duty, breakfast/lunch duty, and other related duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • Active 5-12 Health License with the state of Minnesota.
  • Strong skills in classroom presentation and management.
  • Knowledge of instructional technologies, research, and trends in teaching and student learning.
  • Ability to utilize computer and multimedia technology as appropriate.
  • Knowledge of teaching and learning strategies to meet diverse student needs and abilities.
  • Knowledge of multicultural, gender, and disability-fair curriculum concepts.
  • Ability to adapt instructional routines and scaffolding to diverse student populations.
  • Ability to implement classroom activities that foster problem-solving and critical thinking.
  • Ability to plan and implement lessons based on district and school goals.
  • Strong interpersonal skills to work effectively with students, parents, staff, and community members from diverse backgrounds.
  • Excellent organizational and time management skills; ability to multi-task.
  • Knowledge of school programs, functions, and procedures.
  • Ability to remain calm in emergency and stressful situations; exercise sound judgment within established guidelines.

Preferred Qualifications

  • 3+ years of teaching experience.
  • Experience working with children of diverse ethnic backgrounds in an urban school setting.

Other Information

  • Unofficial transcripts are accepted at the time of hire; official transcripts must be submitted within 30 days of the start date.
  • Formal credential evaluation is required for post-secondary education completed outside of the United States.

Work Environment

  • Duties are performed in a school/classroom environment; the school building is multi-level with elevator access.
  • Extensive interaction with children of all ages; possible exposure to loud and noisy locations (e.g., classrooms, cafeterias).
  • Operate standard equipment (computer, fax, telephone, copier).
  • Fast-paced environment requiring frequent keyboarding, repetitive motion, and rapid eye movements.
  • Ability to sit for extended periods, push, reach, or bend; occasional weekend/evening work and travel may be required.
  • Duties may occasionally be performed on field trips, outdoor environments (athletic fields, playgrounds), or in varying weather conditions.

Engagement Activities

  • Participation in 3 HCPA volunteer activities outside of the traditional school day (e.g., open houses, school dances, prom, concerts).
  • Required activities include grade-level parent meetings, fall and spring parent/teacher conferences, and HCPA graduation.
  • Additional opportunities to engage with the community and expand skills through various committees are highly encouraged.

Pay

Starting hourly rate: $24.59 - $33.35.

Schedule

This is a full-time, onsite position reporting to the K-12 Academic Program Manager. The assignment runs from August 17 to January 29.
